Licensed to Ponce, Puerto Rico, the station serves the entirety of the island with the aid of a booster at Caguas and a translator covering Mayagüez. The station is owned by Pontifical Catholic University of Puerto Rico Service Association, Incorporated. History The Catholic University of Puerto Rico entered into broadcasting when it built WEUC, a 1,000-watt AM radio station operating at 1420 kHz, in 1958. The station, which signed on in May, was the island's first Catholic radio station. The station's call letters stood for ''Emisora Universidad Catolica'' (Catholic University Station). Bishop James E. McManus, who founded the university, had invited Father Carl Hammond to assist in the design of the buildings on the campus; Hammond, an avid ham radio operator, was instrumental in launching the station. 	WRTU WRTU (89.7 FM), branded on-air as Radio Universidad de Puerto Rico, is a National Public Radio member station broadcasting a variety format, together with programming from NPR, PRX, the BBC and other distributors. 	Radio Colegial Radio Colegial is a student run radio station of the University of Puerto Rico - Mayaguez campus. On it, participants have to create radio programs every semester which can be educational, informative or just to entertain the radio listeners. By creating these programs, students have the opportunity to develop creativity, social and communication skills which will help them in the future. History In 2007 a group of students from the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), Recinto Universitario de Mayaguez (RUM) Chapter, took on the task to take a project from their organization that consisted of only one radio program and transformed it into a project that not only was for their benefit, but to whole student community.
