Radio Colegial
Radio Colegial is a student run radio station of the University of Puerto Rico - Mayaguez campus. On it, participants have to create radio programs every semester which can be educational, informative or just to entertain the radio listeners. By creating these programs, students have the opportunity to develop creativity, social and communication skills which will help them in the future. History In 2007 a group of students from the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), Recinto Universitario de Mayaguez (RUM) Chapter, took on the task to take a project from their organization that consisted of only one radio program and transformed it into a project that not only was for their benefit, but to whole student community. WPUC-FM (88.9 FM), branded on-air as Católica Radio, is a non-commercial educational radio station broadcasting an Adult Contemporary format. Licensed to Ponce, Puerto Rico, the station serves the entirety of the island with the aid of a booster at Caguas and a translator covering Mayagüez. The station is owned by Pontifical Catholic University of Puerto Rico Service Association, Incorporated. History The Catholic University of Puerto Rico entered into broadcasting when it built WEUC, a 1,000-watt AM radio station operating at 1420 kHz, in 1958. The station, which signed on in May, was the island's first Catholic radio station. The station's call letters stood for ''Emisora Universidad Catolica'' (Catholic University Station). The University of Puerto Rico, Mayagüez Campus (UPRM) or Recinto Universitario de Mayagüez (RUM) in Spanish (also referred to as Colegio and CAAM in allusion to its former name), is a public land-grant university in Mayagüez, Puerto Rico. UPRM is the second-largest university campus of the University of Puerto Rico system. In addition to its status as a land-grant university, it is also a member of the sea-grant and space-grant research consortia. In 2009, the campus population was composed of 12,108 students, 1,924 regular staff members, and 1,037 members of the education staff.
