WPGU (107.1 FM) is a fully commercial, student-run college radio station on the campus of the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign in Champaign, Illinois. It broadcasts an alternative rock radio format and other programming throughout Champaign-Urbana and surrounding communities. It is owned independently from the university by the Illini Media Company. WPGU has an effective radiated power (ERP) of 3,000 watts. The transmitter is atop the Tower at Third apartment complex on South 3rd Street in Champaign. History Early years WPGU is named for the "Parade Ground Units", where the station was originally located on the university campus. The units were Quonset huts, used to house soldiers returning from World War II, while getting training at the university. The Illini Media Company is a nonprofit, student media company based in Champaign, Illinois. The company owns several student-run media outlets associated with the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign: the general newspaper, the ''Daily Illini''; the entertainment paper, '' Buzz Magazine''; the engineering quarterly, '' Technograph''; the U of I yearbook, the '' Illio''; and the commercial radio station, WPGU. The Illini Publishing Company was chartered by the State of Illinois in 1911. In 1984, it became the Illini Media Company. ''Volunteers'' is the fifth studio album by American psychedelic rock band Jefferson Airplane, released in 1969 on RCA Records. The album was controversial because of its revolutionary and anti-war lyrics, along with the use of profanity. Jefferson Airplane was an American Rock music, rock band formed in San Francisco, California, in 1965.
