WNWI (1080 AM) is a time brokered radio station broadcasting an ethnic radio format. Licensed to Oak Lawn, Illinois, United States, it serves the Chicago area. The station is currently owned by the Birach Broadcasting Corporation. WNWI operates on a clear-channel frequency, with WTIC in Hartford, Connecticut and KRLD in Dallas, Texas the dominant Class A stations. WNWI's calls stand for "Northwestern Indiana", a reference to the station's former city of license of Valparaiso, Indiana. The station broadcast a full-service adult contemporary music format from Valparaiso from its sign-on in 1965 until the spring of 1998, when it officially moved into the Chicago market by changing its city of license to Oak Lawn and relocating its transmitter to Riverdale. Valparaiso ( ), colloquially Valpo, is a city and the county seat of Porter County, Indiana, United States. The population was 34,151 at the 2020 census. History The site of present-day Valparaiso was included in the purchase of land from the Potawatomi people by the U.S. Government in October 1832. Chiqua's town or Chipuaw was located a mile east of the current Courthouse along the Sauk Trail. Chiqua's town existed from or before 1830 until after 1832. The location is just north of the railroad crossing on State Route 2 and County Road 400 North. Valparaiso Technical Institute
Valparaiso Technical Institute (1874–1991), previously located in Valparaiso, Indiana, was originally established by G.A. Dodge as a department of Northern Indiana Normal School. After its reorganization in 1891 the school became the largest telegraph and railway instruction institution in the United States, and was known as "The Dodge Institute of Telegraphy." The name was changed to Valparaiso Technical Institute in 1944 by J.B. Hershman, who is credited as the institute's first founder and president. WAKE (AM)
WAKE (1500 AM) is a radio station broadcasting an oldies format. WAKE had an adult standards format until 2009, when it briefly switched to CNN Headline News, before adopting a classic country format in 2010. In November 2011, the station switched back to standards, using Dial Global Local's The Lounge format. After "The Lounge" was discontinued on June 17, 2012, WAKE switched to an oldies/classic hits format featuring hit music chiefly from the 1970s and early 1980s, again using a Dial Global source. Licensed to Valparaiso, Indiana, United States, the station is currently owned by Marion R. Williams. WAKE is a Class D radio station broadcasting on the clear-channel frequency of 1500 kHz.
