WMSG is a Classic Hits formatted broadcast radio station licensed to Oakland, Maryland, serving Oakland and Garrett County, Maryland. WMSG is owned and operated by Broadcast Communications II, Inc. Transmitter and antenna in Oakland, Maryland History Beginnings WMSG first signed on the air May 19, 1963, under the ownership of Oakland Radio Station Corporation, a company headed by C.W. Englander. Thomas Butscher served as the station's general manager and program director. The station first operated at a daytime-only power of 500 watts and played mostly country music. In 1966, WMSG-FM signed on the air. The station was primarily a simulcast outlet of WMSG, to provide Oakland with local radio service after WMSG was mandated to shut down after sunset. In 1985, WMSG was granted a construction permit to double its power to 1,000 watts, but still daytime only. The upgrades were completed the following year. WKTQ (FM)
WKTQ is a Country formatted broadcast radio station licensed to Oakland, Maryland. Due to the high altitude of its tower, WKTQ's signal covers most of Garrett County, Maryland, most of neighboring Preston County, West Virginia, and parts of Tucker, Grant, and Mineral Counties in West Virginia. WKTQ is owned and operated by Broadcast Communications II, Inc. History WKTQ began as a simulcast of sister station WMSG in 1966. WMSG split from the simulcast in 1978 and became WXIE. The first format on WXIE was a soft adult contemporary format. In 1991, WXIE moved from 92.1 to 92.3 and became "92X" and began running a classic hits format. WXIE went dark in 1994. In 1995, the frequency was acquired by Oakland Media Group, changed call letters to WWHC and began playing Country with the branding "Hot Country 92". Oakland, Maryland
Oakland is a town in the west-central part of Garrett County, Maryland, United States. The town has a population of 1,925 according to the 2010 United States Census. The town is also the county seat of Garrett County and is located within the Pittsburgh DMA. Oakland is situated only miles from the source of the Potomac River, which flows directly into Chesapeake Bay. It is also near the Wisp Resort at Deep Creek Lake, a major ski resort for many Marylanders and other visitors. History Oakland was formally incorporated as a town in 1862. The town is home to a historic B&O railroad station, which was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1973, and restored in the 2000s. Classic hits is a radio format which generally includes songs from the top 40 music charts from the late 1960s to the early 2000s, with music from the 1980s serving as the core of the format. Music that was popularized by MTV in the early 1980s and the nostalgia behind it is a major driver to the format. It is considered the successor to the oldies format, a collection of top 40 songs from the late 1950s through the late 1970s that was once extremely popular in the United States and Canada. Westwood One News
Westwood One News was a radio news network launched on January 1, 2015, and operated by Westwood One through its parent company Cumulus Media. Using audio from CNN reports and correspondents, and anchored by Cumulus employees, it provided radio stations with hourly newscasts as well as voiced reports that could be individually used by member stations. It was discontinued on August 30, 2020. Unlike most radio networks, the programming was unbranded as a " white-label" service with no mention of either Westwood One or CNN. The anchors and correspondents simply gave their names without saying what service they worked for. That way, Westwood One News could be carried under the station's local branding.
