WKZV (FM)
WKZV (102.1 MHz) is a non-commercial Christian FM radio station licensed to Tybee Island, Georgia. The station is owned by the Educational Media Foundation, and serves the Savannah metropolitan area. Its transmitter is located west of the city in unincorporated Chatham County. History On October 20, 1971, WZAT signed on. It was a completely automated Top 40/ CHR station except for the locally popular "Breakfast With Burl" program, which was live. Airstaff was gradually added the rest of the day. Between a strong AM station, AM 1400 WSGA, and a slightly lighter top 40 station, FM 95.5 WSGF, a real format war ensued. By 1986, 95SGF had become AOR/ CR outlet WIXV, and in 1982, AM 1400 moved out of the format as younger listeners preferred FM radio. In the 1980s to early-1990s, "Z102" was the dominant (and often only) Top 40 station in Savannah. Tybee Island, Georgia
Tybee Island is a city and a barrier island located in Chatham County, Georgia, 18 miles (29 km) east of Savannah, United States. Though the name "Tybee Island" is used for both the island and the city, geographically they are not identical: only part of the island's territory lies within the city. The island is the easternmost point in Georgia. The famous phrase "From Rabun Gap to Tybee Light," intended to illustrate the geographic diversity of Georgia, contrasts a mountain pass near the state's northernmost point with the coastal island's famous lighthouse. It is the opposite of a sign-off (or closedown in Commonwealth countries except Canada), which is the sequence of operations involved when a radio or television station shuts down its transmitters and goes off the air for a predetermined period; generally, this occurs during the overnight hours although a broadcaster's digital specialty or sub-channels may sign-on and sign-off at significantly different times as its main channels. Modern Rock
Modern rock is an umbrella term used to describe rock music that is found on college rock radio stations. Some radio stations use this term to distinguish themselves from classic rock, which is based in 1960s–1980s rock music. WSGA (FM)
WSGA (92.3 FM), known as "92.3 Thunder Country", is a country music radio station targeted towards Savannah, Georgia. It is owned by Richard Pope, through licensee WRGO-FM Radio LLC. The call sign and format were on its sister station WTHG, which flipped to a classic rock format in late April 2006. On March 31, 2008, 92.3 flipped from "Freedom 92-3". WSGA is unique because it was the first station in the Savannah market to flip to the expanding variety-hits format. Within a couple of months, competitor "Oldies 98.3" was changed to a variety-hits format as " 98.3 Jack FM". WGCO has a much better signal towards Savannah, so there had been little enthusiasm for WSGA. On March 16, 2007, WGCO reverted to its previous incarnation as "Oldies 98.3" (like WCBS-FM did that same year). WAEV
WAEV (97.3 FM, "97.3 Kiss FM") is a commercial radio station licensed to Savannah, Georgia. Owned by iHeartMedia, it broadcasts a contemporary hit radio format. WAEV's transmitter is located near Bloomingdale, Georgia, and shares studios with its sister stations in Garden City. History During the early- and mid-1970s, WXLM was an easy listening station. In September 1977, the station flipped to Album Rock in response to WTOC starting a highly successful overnight album rock program in 1976. Before this, Savannah had been without a rock station since WEAS-FM flipped in the early 1970s. 97.3 went by the name 97 Rock with the call sign WXLM. Album-oriented rock (AOR, originally called album-oriented radio) is an FM radio format created in the United States in the 1970s that focuses on the full repertoire of rock albums and is currently associated with classic rock. Album-oriented radio was originally established by U.S. radio stations dedicated to playing album tracks by rock artists from the hard rock to progressive rock genres. In the mid-1970s, AOR was characterized by a layered, mellifluous sound and sophisticated production with considerable dependence on melodic hooks. Using research and formal programming to create an album rock format with greater commercial appeal, the AOR format achieved tremendous popularity in the late 1970s and early 1980s. WIXV (95.5 FM, "I-95") is a classic rock formatted radio station licensed to Savannah, Georgia, United States. It is owned by Cumulus Broadcasting. History WSGF-FM WIXV began as WSGF-FM. An application for WSGF-FM, and the callsign, was originally applied for on June 8, 1971; however, an earlier application for the station to operate on 102.1 MHz was tendered in 1969. WSGF-FM began broadcasting on April 24, 1972, & would receive its license to broadcast on April 11, 1973. WSGF-FM originally broadcast a middle-of-the-road (MOR) format.
