WKXI-FM (107.5 MHz, "Kixie 107") is an urban adult contemporary music formatted radio station licensed to Magee, Mississippi and serving Jackson. History The Southeast Mississippi Broadcasting Company, which owned WSJC (810 AM) in Magee, received a construction permit on December 15, 1966, for an FM station to serve the same town. By 1968, construction was underway, including on an auxiliary studio for both stations in Mendenhall. The station did not sign on until April 12, 1970; it aired a variety of musical formats and simulcast the AM during the early morning hours. WJQS (1400 AM) is a sports talk radio station in Jackson, Mississippi, owned by Alpha Media through licensee Alpha Media Licensee LLC. Along with five other sister stations, its studios are located in Ridgeland, a suburb of Jackson, while the transmitter tower is in Jackson just north of downtown. History For many years, this station was called "Fun Country - 1400 WJQS". Television news anchor Bert Case began his career in broadcasting at this station. In the 1960s, the station's studios were moved to a small building on Terry Road, near Jackson State University. Ann Zimmerman owned the station, and the format was country-Western music. History The 1300 kHz frequency was assigned the WRBC call letters for several years. Around 1978, the transmitter site was rebuilt and call letters were changed to WKXI. In March 1996, the WOAD call letters and gospel format moved to the more powerful 1300 kHz, after swapping frequencies with then-sister station WJQS, WKXI. WJNT is currently owned by Alpha Media through licensee Alpha Media Licensee LLC and its sister stations are WJMI, WKXI-FM, WOAD, WRKS, and WJQS. Magee, Mississippi
Magee is a city in Simpson County, Mississippi, United States. It is part of the Jackson metropolitan area. History The first settlers in the area were Arthur Mangum and Phil Magee, who came into the area around 1820. Pioneers from Virginia and the Carolinas followed. The town of Magee was originally named Mangum, after Arthur Mangum; it kept this name until 1859. In 1840, Willis Magee built a grist mill on Little Goodwater Creek, inside the present city limits. He started the first and only postal service in the area in 1855. Robert Solomon Magee was the first post master in Magee and the city of Magee was named after him. Richard Farthing came to Magee in 1859 when he was in the leather tanning business. He bought 80 acres of land and also built a tanyard and used water from the mill pond to tan his leather. WJMI (99.7 FM) is a radio station licensed to Jackson, Mississippi, United States, with a mainstream urban musical format. Station history The station began in 1967 as an FM sister to station WRBC and was owned by the Rebel Broadcasting Company. Urban adult contemporary, often abbreviated as urban AC or UAC, (also known as adult R&B,) is the name for a format of radio music, similar to an urban contemporary format. Radio stations using this format usually would not have hip hop music on their playlists, and generally include some mix of contemporary R&B and traditional R&B (while urban oldies stations emphasize only the latter). Urban adult contemporary playlists generally consist of many different genres that originated amongst Black Americans including R&B, soul, funk, disco, jazz, pop, hip-hop, electro, quiet storm, gospel, new jack swing, and hip-hop soul.
