WJMI (99.7 FM) is a radio station licensed to Jackson, Mississippi, United States, with a mainstream urban musical format. The station is owned by Alpha Media through licensee Alpha Media Licensee LLC. Along with five other sister stations, its studios are located in Ridgeland, a suburb of Jackson, while the transmitter tower is south of Raymond. Station history The station began in 1967 as an FM sister to station WRBC and was owned by the Rebel Broadcasting Company. Most of the disc jockeys who were on WRBC took shifts on the FM station, and hosting a shift on the FM station was used to test new talent for WRBC. Among the more famous voices to be heard on WJMI were Bob Pittman (founder of MTV), Walt Grayson (later a television weatherperson for two Jackson television stations), and Mary Lewis. WJNT (1180 AM) is a radio station licensed to Pearl, Mississippi. WJQS (1400 AM) is a sports talk radio station in Jackson, Mississippi, owned by Alpha Media through licensee Alpha Media Licensee LLC. Along with five other sister stations, its studios are located in Ridgeland, a suburb of Jackson, while the transmitter tower is in Jackson just north of downtown. History For many years, this station was called "Fun Country - 1400 WJQS". Television news anchor Bert Case began his career in broadcasting at this station. In the 1960s, the station's studios were moved to a small building on Terry Road, near Jackson State University. Ann Zimmerman owned the station, and the format was country-Western music. News was broadcast every 20 minutes. In 1983, WJQS was sold to John Pembroke who switched the call letters to WOAD and changed the format to black gospel. History The 1300 kHz frequency was assigned the WRBC call letters for several years. Around 1978, the transmitter site was rebuilt and call letters were changed to WKXI. In March 1996, the WOAD call letters and gospel format moved to the more powerful 1300 kHz, after swapping frequencies with then-sister station WJQS, WKXI. Ridgeland, Mississippi
Ridgeland is a city in Madison County, Mississippi, United States. The population was 24,047 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jackson, Mississippi metropolitan area. History In 1805, the Choctaw Indian Agency, headed by Silas Dinsmoor, was located in what is now known as Ridgeland. There is also a neighborhood called Dinsmor in Ridgeland. The structure was then called Turner Brashear's Stand until about 1850. It was adapted for use as a hotel named the King's Inn. During the American Civil War, King's Inn was used as a headquarters by General Stephen Lee. Afterward, it again operated as a hotel until 1896, when it was destroyed by fire. In 1853, James B.
