WFLT
WFLT (1420 AM) is a radio station broadcasting an Urban Gospel format. Licensed to Flint, Michigan, it first began broadcasting as WAMM in 1955. As WAMM, 1420 AM was the area's premier African-American-oriented R&B station for years. The station also provided an early on-air job for future American Top 40 host Casey Kasem (who moved on to WJBK in Detroit and then to Los Angeles). Though primarily targeted at black listeners, WAMM had many white listeners as well. In the fall of 1979, WDZZ-FM signed on as Flint's first urban FM station and quickly became a ratings success. Flint, Michigan
Flint is the largest city and seat of Genesee County, Michigan, United States. Located along the Flint River, northwest of Detroit, it is a principal city within the region known as Mid Michigan. At the 2020 census, Flint had a population of 81,252, making it the twelfth largest city in Michigan. The Flint metropolitan area is located entirely within Genesee County. WDZZ-FM
WDZZ-FM (92.7 MHz, "Z92.7") is a radio station broadcasting an urban adult contemporary format, licensed to Flint, Michigan, and under ownership of Cumulus Media. Its studios are located south of the Flint city limits and its transmitter is north of downtown Flint. History WDZZ was founded by Vernon Merritt in 1979 as the Flint area's first FM station to target African-American audiences, playing a mixture of disco music and jazz which eventually evolved into mainstream Urban Contemporary. It is believed that the call letters were a tribute to the song "Dazz" by the group Brick; "Dazz" was an amalgamation of "disco" and "jazz". Before the sign-on of 92.7, WAMM 1420 now WFLT served as Flint's Rhythm & Blues Station, with its only competition being Saginaw's WWWS which did not provide a clear signal over much of the Flint area. Urban Gospel
Urban/contemporary gospel is a modern subgenre of gospel music. Although the style developed gradually, early forms are generally dated to the 1970s, and the genre was well established by the end of the 1980s. The radio format is pitched primarily to African-Americans. Christian hip hop can be considered a subtype of this genre. Kemal Amin "Casey" Kasem (April 27, 1932 – June 15, 2014) was an American disc jockey, actor, and radio personality, who created and hosted several radio countdown programs, notably '' American Top 40''. He was the first actor to voice Norville "Shaggy" Rogers in the ''Scooby-Doo'' franchise (1969 to 1997 and 2002 to 2009) and as Dick Grayson/Robin in ''Super Friends'' (1973–1985). Kasem began hosting the original ''American Top 40'' on the weekend of July 4, 1970, and remained there until 1988. He would then spend nine years hosting another countdown titled ''Casey's Top 40'', beginning in January 1989 and ending in February 1998, before returning to revive ''American Top 40'' in 1998. WLQV (1500 kHz) is a commercial AM radio station licensed to Detroit, Michigan. It is owned by the Salem Media Group and broadcasts a Christian talk and teaching radio format. It uses paid brokered programming where hosts buy time on the station and may seek donations to their ministries during their programs. Religious leaders heard on WLQV include David Jeremiah, John MacArthur, Alistair Begg, Jim Daly, Tony Evans and Charles Stanley. The studios are on Radio Plaza in Ferndale, Michigan. Albert W. Ham (February 6, 1925 in Malden, Massachusetts — October 4, 2001 in Spring Hill, Florida) was an American composer and jingle writer. He was notable as the composer of the ''Move Closer to Your World'' music package used since the 1970s on WPVI-TV's Action News broadcasts in Philadelphia, and, most notably, WKBW-TV's Eyewitness News, as well as on many other newscasts in the United States throughout the 1970s and 1980s.
