WDZZ-FM
WDZZ-FM (92.7 MHz, "Z92.7") is a radio station broadcasting an urban adult contemporary format, licensed to Flint, Michigan, and under ownership of Cumulus Media. Its studios are located south of the Flint city limits and its transmitter is north of downtown Flint. History WDZZ was founded by Vernon Merritt in 1979 as the Flint area's first FM station to target African-American audiences, playing a mixture of disco music and jazz which eventually evolved into mainstream Urban Contemporary. It is believed that the call letters were a tribute to the song "Dazz" by the group Brick; "Dazz" was an amalgamation of "disco" and "jazz". Before the sign-on of 92.7, WAMM 1420 now WFLT served as Flint's Rhythm & Blues Station, with its only competition being Saginaw's WWWS which did not provide a clear signal over much of the Flint area. WFLT
WFLT (1420 AM) is a radio station broadcasting an Urban Gospel format. Licensed to Flint, Michigan, it first began broadcasting as WAMM in 1955. As WAMM, 1420 AM was the area's premier African-American-oriented R&B station for years. The station also provided an early on-air job for future American Top 40 host Casey Kasem (who moved on to WJBK in Detroit and then to Los Angeles). Though primarily targeted at black listeners, WAMM had many white listeners as well. In the fall of 1979, WDZZ-FM signed on as Flint's first urban FM station and quickly became a ratings success. WRSR
WRSR (103.9 FM, "The Fox") is a radio station broadcasting a classic rock format. Licensed to Owosso, Michigan, it first began broadcasting in 1965 under the WOAP-FM call sign. Its transmitter is located east of Owosso, while its studios are located in Flint Charter Township, Michigan, Flint Township. It also broadcasts Detroit Lions games. History The original WOAP-FM began broadcasting in April 1948 at 103.1 on the FM dial. Although the station's owner, ''Argus-Press, The Owosso Argus-Press'', which also owned AM station WOAP 1080, heavily promoted its new FM station, WOAP-FM was a failure and went off the air by 1953. HD Radio
HD Radio (HDR) is a trademark for an in-band on-channel (IBOC) digital radio broadcast technology. It generally simulcasts an existing analog radio station in digital format with less noise and with additional text information. HD Radio is used primarily by AM and FM radio stations in the United States, Canada, and Mexico, with a few implementations outside North America. The term "on channel" is a misnomer because the system actually broadcasts on the ordinarily unused channels adjacent to an existing radio station's allocation. This leaves the original analog signal intact, allowing enabled receivers to switch between digital and analog as required. In most FM implementations, from 96 to 128 kbps of capacity is available. WTLZ (107.1 FM, "Kiss 107.1") is a radio station licensed to Saginaw, Michigan broadcasting an urban adult contemporary format. WTLZ retains a strong signal south of Saginaw toward Flint, but moving eastward toward the Lapeer County area, WSAQ 107.1 "Q Country" signal tends to overpower WTLZ as they are both on the same frequency. History 107.1 FM signed on in October 1969 as WWWS "W3-Soul" with an ERP of 2,000 Watts. W3 Soul at the time played a mix of Jazz and R&B for the Tri-Cities. The studios were located on Bancroft at East Genesee in Saginaw. Brick (band)
Brick is an American band that created a successful merger of funk and jazz in the 1970s. Their most popular single was "Dazz", (#3 U.S. Pop, #1 U.S. R&B, #36 UK Singles Chart) which was released in 1976. History Brick was formed in Atlanta, Georgia, in 1972 from members of two bands - one disco and the other jazz. They coined their own term for disco-jazz, "dazz". They released their first single "Music Matic" on Main Street Records in 1976, before signing to the independently distributed Bang Records. Their next single, "Dazz", (#3 Pop, #1 R&B) was released in 1976. The band continued to record for Bang records until 1982.
