It was Pensacola's third radio station, carrying programs of the Mutual Broadcasting System and owned by Gulfport Broadcasting Company, consisting of investors from Pensacola and Texas. The 250-watt outlet moved to 1230 on February 1, 1950. WEAR's affiliation soon changed to ABC, in time for WEAR to spawn a television station: WEAR-TV channel 3, which began telecasting January 13, 1954.
