WA Guineas
The Western Australian Guineas is a Perth Racing Group 2 Thoroughbred horse race for three-year-olds at set weights run over a distance of 1600 metres at Ascot Racecourse, Perth, Western Australia in November. Total prize money is A$500,000. History The race was first held at Ascot racecourse on 15 November 1937, to mark the official date of the King's Birthday, as a weight-for-age mile race for three-year-olds. It was dropped from the race calendar in 1941 due to wartime economies. It was restored in 1943 and was run on the Saturday of the King's Birthday Meeting in November. In 2003 the race was run at Belmont Park Racecourse. Ascot Racecourse (Western Australia)
Ascot Racecourse is the major racecourse in Perth, Western Australia, situated approximately east of the Perth central business district, with the headquarters of the Perth Racing positioned directly opposite. It is regarded as the "grand old lady" of Australian racecourses. It has a track with modern, well drained turf, and a track inclining straight regarded by experts as the most severe test of stayers in Australia. History In 1848 a race meeting was held on Hardey's "Grove Farm" alongside the Swan River. Soon afterwards a site was selected for a permanent course on Hardey's propertythis became the Perth Race Course (later Ascot Racecourse). In 1852, the West Australian Turf Club was formed. The Thoroughbred is a horse breed best known for its use in horse racing. The Western Australian Turf Club (WATC), later known as Perth Racing, was established in late nineteenth century as an elite social institution and administrator of the Western Australian horse racing industry. They manage two racecourses in Perth, Ascot Racecourse and Belmont Park Racecourse. Some aspects of the clubs functions were taken over by Racing and Wagering Western Australia when it was created in 2003. Belmont Park, Western Australia
