The World Rally-Raid Championship (officially abbreviated as W2RC) is a rally raid series organised by the Amaury Sport Organization and co-sanctioned by the FIA and FIM. The championship's seasons culminate with world championship titles in both automobile and motorcycle categories. Beginning in 2022, the series replaced both the FIA World Cup for Cross-Country Rallies and FIM Cross-Country Rallies World Championship as the top echelon of the sport of rally raid. The ASO will serve as series promotor for a period of five years. History The combined World Championship series was conceived as a result of efforts by the ASO, FIA and FIM to harmonize regulations. 2022 World Rally-Raid Championship
The 2022 World Rally-Raid Championship was the inaugural season of the annual competition for rally raid events sanctioned by both the FIA and FIM. Calendar The calendar for the 2022 season originally featured five rally-raid events. Rally Kazakhstan, which was initially planned for 24–30 April, was cancelled due to the Russian invasion of Ukraine. The Andalucía Rally was moved from its original 6–12 June date to October due to a heat wave and wildfire risk in the region, and the Rallye du Maroc was pushed forward by five days to accommodate the change. Nasser Salih Nasser Abdullah Al-Attiyah ( ar, ناصر صالح ناصر عبدالله العطية : nāṣir ṣāliḥ nāṣir ʿabdullāh al-ʿaṭṭīyah; born 21 December 1970 in Doha) is a Qatari rally driver and sport shooter. He was the 2006 Production World Rally Champion, 2014 and 2015 WRC-2 champion, a 16 time Middle East Rally Champion, five times winner of the FIA World Cup for Cross-Country Rallies, and a quadruple (2011, 2015, 2019, 2022) Dakar Rally winner. His four victories in the Dakar Rally make him the only Middle Easterner and West Asian to win the competition more than once. In shooting, Al-Attiyah won the bronze medal in the men's skeet event at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London. Rally Raid
Rally raid, also known as cross-country rallying, is a form of long distance off-road racing that takes place over several days. The length of the event can be as short as 2–3 days for a cross-country baja to as long as 15 days with marathon rallies like the Dakar Rally; with other cross-country rally events lasting 4–5 days. With skill in navigation being key, the driving skill and endurance of riders, drivers, co-drivers, and machines are put to the test. The total distance covered can be anywhere between 600 km to over 5,000 km with terrain ranging from sandy dunes, forest roads, mountain roads, and dry river beds; among others. FIA World Cup For Cross-Country Bajas
The FIA World Cup for Cross-Country Bajas is a rally raid series organized by the FIA, culminating with a champion driver, co-driver, and team; with additional trophies awarded to T3 and T4 drivers & teams. Starting with the 2002 season, the previous FIA's International Cup for Cross-Country Bajas was joined with the FIA Cross-Country Rally World Cup to form the FIA World Cup for Cross-Country Rallies. From the beginning of the 2019 season the cup was once again split, with the World Cup for Cross Country Bajas being held alongside the competition for "baja" style rally raids. The Rallye du Maroc is a rally-raid which is disputed each year in Morocco from 2000. The event is part of both the World Rally-Raid Championship co-sanctioned by the FIA and FIM, after previously being overseen separately by the FIA World Cup for Cross-Country Rallies and FIM Cross-Country Rallies World Championship. 2022 Dakar Rally
The 2022 Dakar Rally was a rally raid event held in Saudi Arabia and the 44th edition of the Dakar Rally organized by Amaury Sport Organisation (ASO). The event took place between 1–14 January 2022. This was the third time Saudi Arabia had hosted the event, with support from the Saudi Automobile and Motorcycle Federation. The race started in Ha'il and ended in Jeddah, going through canyons and cliffs in the Neom region, passing by the Red Sea coastline, into to stretches of dunes surrounding Riyadh, with a lot more action on sand dunes in the Empty Quarter. The route consisted of one prologue stage and 12 normal stages, with one rest day in Riyadh on 8 January. When ASO signed the five-year deal with Saudi Arabia, there was a first-year exclusivity clause. Since it has expired, more countries could have been added to the route. Dakar Rally
The Dakar Rally (or simply "The Dakar"; formerly known as the "Paris–Dakar Rally") is an annual rally raid organised by the Amaury Sport Organisation. Most events since the inception in 1978 were staged from Paris, France, to Dakar, Senegal, but due to security threats in Mauritania, which led to the cancellation of the 2008 rally, events from 2009 to 2019 were held in South America. Since 2020, the rally has been held in Saudi Arabia. The event is open to amateur and professional entries, amateurs typically making up about eighty percent of the participants. The rally is an off-road endurance event.
