W.A. Gaines And Company
W.A. Gaines and Company was a liquor (distilled beverage) company that specialized in American-made whiskeys. Originally started as the partnership Gaines, Berry & Co. in 1862, it was reorganized in 1868 as W.A. Gaines and Company and later became a joint stock company in 1887. Among the company's investors and officers was Edson Bradley. History Brands included Old Crow and Old Hermitage. W.A. Gaines erected the Hermitage distillery in 1868, and were the largest producers of fine "sour mash" whiskeys in the world. Its owners were accused of being major players in the "Whiskey Trust", but that was never proved. The involvement of W.A. Gaines and Co. in the whiskey industry ended with Prohibition. National Distillers, which owned the distillery and brand from the end of Prohibition until 1987, continued to use the W.A. Gaines and Company name. Jim Beam bought National in 1987. Edson Bradley
Edson Bradley, Jr. (May 9, 1852 – June 20, 1935) was president of Kentucky whiskey distiller W.A. Gaines and Company of Frankfort, Kentucky. He owned the exclusive rights to the "Old Crow" whisky label. Biography Bradley was born on May 9, 1852, in New Canaan, Connecticut. His debutante daughter Julia Bradley had her coming out party in 1894. She married Bishop Herbert Shipman. Bradley has been known for his properties. In 1923, he dismantled his home and reassembled it in Newport, Rhode Island. An account stated that it was constructed for his wife and it cost him two million dollars. The house, which included a seven acre lawn and located close to the shore of the Atlantic Ocean, earned for its architect, Howard Greenley, an Architectural League of New York prize. Old Crow
Old Crow is a low-priced brand of Kentucky-made straight bourbon whiskey distilled by Beam Suntory, which also produces Jim Beam and several other brands of whiskey. The current Old Crow product uses the same mash bill and yeast as Jim Beam, but is aged for a shorter period of time. The Old Crow brand has a venerable history as one of Kentucky's earliest bourbons. Sour mash (or sourmash) is a process used in the distilling industry that uses material from an older batch of mash to start the fermentation of a new batch, analogous to the making of sourdough bread with a starter. The term can also be used as the name of the type of mash used in such a process, and a bourbon made using this process can be referred to as a ''sour mash bourbon''.
