Víctor Patricio De Landaluze
Víctor Patricio de Landaluze (1828 - 8 June 1889), was a Spanish-born painter active for much of his career in Cuba. Biography Born in 1830 in Bilbao, Landaluce received a careful education, which included learning several languages. For a time he resided in Paris. His presence in Cuba was recorded around the year 1850. He is the best-known Cuban practitioner of ''costumbrismo'', depicting Cuba peasants (''guajiros''), landowners, and slaves. He taught at the Academy of Fine Arts of San Alejandro in Havana, and served as its director. He opposed Cuban independence, an attitude reflected in his work; nevertheless his paintings provide a valuable view of nineteenth-century Cuban society. His works also depict a somewhat idealized view of plantation life. His first work consisted in the illustration of the book "The Cubans painted by themselves". Academia Nacional de Bellas Artes San Alejandro, is the oldest and most prestigious fine arts school in Cuba. It is also known as Escuela Nacional de Bellas Artes "San Alejandro", Academia San Alejandro, or San Alejandro Academy. The school is located in Marianao, a suburb of Havana, and was founded in 1818 at the ''Convent of San Alejandro''. It is located today in a monumental building built in the early 1940s. Sugar Plantations In The Caribbean
Sugar plantations in the Caribbean were a major part of the economy of the islands in the 18th, 19th, and 20th centuries. Most Caribbean, Caribbean islands were covered with Sugarcane, sugar cane fields and mills for refining the crop. The main source of labor, until Abolitionism, the abolition of chattel slavery, was Atlantic slave trade, enslaved Africans. After the abolition of slavery, Indentured servitude, indentured laborers from India, China, Portugal and other places were brought to the Caribbean to work in the sugar industry. These plantations produced 80 to 90 percent of the sugar consumed in Western Europe, later supplanted by European-grown sugar beet. The National Museum of Fine Arts of Havana (Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes de La Habana) in Havana, Cuba is a museum of fine arts that exhibits Cuban art collections from the colonial times up to contemporary generations. History It was founded on February 23, 1913, due to the efforts of its first director, Emilio Heredia, a well-known architect. Josephine Dawn Adès, (''née'' Tylden-Pattenson; born 6 May 1943), also known as Dawn Adès, is a British art historian and academic. She is professor emeritus of art history and theory at the University of Essex. Early life and education Adès was born on 6 May 1943 to A. E. Tylden-Pattenson. She studied at St Hilda's College, Oxford, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree in 1965. She then studied art history at the Courtauld Institute of Art, graduating with a Master of Arts (MA) degree in 1968. Career Adès has spent the majority of her academic career working at the University of Essex.
