Vétheuil
Vétheuil () is a commune on the Seine, 60 kilometers northwest of Paris, France. Vétheuil is located in the arrondissement of Pontoise in the Val-d'Oise department. Personalities Impressionist painter Claude Monet lived in Vétheuil from 1878 to 1881, during which time he produced some 150 paintings. Joan Mitchell moved to Vetheuil in 1959 where she productively made many abstract works. Camille Doncieux (1847-1879) was the first wife of Claude Monet, who painted her portrait in 1886. Before marrying Monet she was his model, and appeared three times in the painting ''Women in the Garden'' (''Femmes au jardin''). She died in Vétheuil, where she and her husband lived since 1878, and her grave is in Vétheuil cemetery. Joan Mitchell
Joan Mitchell (February 12, 1925 – October 30, 1992) was an American artist who worked primarily in painting and printmaking, and also used pastel and made other works on paper. She was an active participant in the New York School of artists in the 1950s. A native of Chicago, she is associated with the American abstract expressionist movement, even though she lived in France for much of her career. Mitchell's emotionally intense style and its gestural brushwork were influenced by nineteenth-century post-impressionist painters, particularly Henri Matisse. Memories of landscapes inspired her compositions; she famously told art critic Irving Sandler, "I carry my landscapes around with me." Her later work was informed and constrained by her declining health. Mitchell was one of her era's few female painters to gain critical and public acclaim. Oscar-Claude Monet (, , ; 14 November 1840 – 5 December 1926) was a French painter and founder of impressionist painting who is seen as a key precursor to modernism, especially in his attempts to paint nature as he perceived it. Camille Doncieux
Camille-Léonie Doncieux (; 15 January 1847 – 5 September 1879) was the first wife of French painter Claude Monet, with whom she had two sons. She was the subject of a number of paintings by Monet, as well as Pierre-Auguste Renoir and Édouard Manet. Early life Camille-Léonie Doncieux was born in the town of La Guillotiere, now part of Lyons, France, on 15 January 1847. Her father, Charles Claude Doncieux, was a merchant. He moved with his wife Leonie-Françoise (née Manéchalle) Doncieux and daughter to Paris, near the Sorbonne, early in the Second French Empire (1852-1870).
