Virginia's 71st House of Delegates district is responsible for electing one of the 100 members of the Virginia House of Delegates, which is the lower house of the state's bicameral legislature.The district 71 is primarily located in the city of Richmond. Currently, the 71st district is represented by Democrat Jeff Bourne, who was elected in a special election held in February, 2017. Virginia House Of Delegates
The Virginia House of Delegates is one of the two parts of the Virginia General Assembly, the other being the Senate of Virginia. It has 100 members elected for terms of two years; unlike most states, these elections take place during odd-numbered years. The House is presided over by the Speaker of the House, who is elected from among the House membership by the Delegates. The Speaker is usually a member of the majority party and, as Speaker, becomes the most powerful member of the House. The House shares legislative power with the Senate of Virginia, the upper house of the Virginia General Assembly. Jeff Bourne (politician)
Jeffrey Michael Bourne (born 1976) is an American attorney and politician. He is a member of the Virginia House of Delegates from the 71st district, after winning a special election on February 7, 2017, to fill the seat vacated by Jennifer McClellan's election to the Senate of Virginia. Early life and education Born in Hartford, Connecticut, Bourne was raised in Richmond, Virginia, and graduated from George Wythe High School. He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in economics from the College of William & Mary in 1999 and a Juris Doctor from the William & Mary Law School in 2007. Jennifer Leigh McClellan (born December 28, 1972) is an American lawyer and politician serving as the Virginia state senator from the 9th district since 2017. A member of the Democratic Party, she was previously elected to the Virginia House of Delegates from 2006 to 2017, representing the 71st district.
