Victor Adam
Jean Victor Adam (28 January 1801 – 30 December 1866) was a French painter and lithographer. Life Adam was born in Paris in 1801, the son of Jean Adam (engraver), Jean Adam, an engraver. He studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in 1814–18, and also in the ateliers of Charles Meynier, Meynier and Jean-Baptiste Regnault, Régnault. In 1819 he exhibited ''Herminia succouring Tancred''. He was almost immediately afterwards employed to paint various subjects for the Palace of Versailles, Museum at Versailles, including ''The Entry of the French into Mainz'', ''The Battle of Varroux'', ''The Taking of Menin'', ''The Battle of Castiglione'', ''The Passage of the Cluse'', ''The Battle of Montebello'' and ''The Capitulation of Meiningen'' the last three in collaboration with Jean Alaux. Charles is a masculine given name predominantly found in English and French speaking countries. It is from the French form ''Charles'' of the Proto-Germanic name (in runic alphabet) or ''*karilaz'' (in Latin alphabet), whose meaning was "free man". The Old English descendant of this word was '' Ċearl'' or ''Ċeorl'', as the name of King Cearl of Mercia, that disappeared after the Norman conquest of England. Société Des Artistes Français
The Société des Artistes Français (, meaning "Society of French Artists") is the association of French painters and sculptors established in 1881. Its annual exhibition is called the "Salon des artistes français" (not to be confused with the better-known Salon, established in 1667). When the Société was established, it associated all the French artists. Its president was a painter and its vice-president a sculptor. The main task of the Société is to organize the ''Salon'', since the French government ceased to do it. Secession In December 1890 president Bouguereau suggested that the ''Salon'' should be an exhibition of young, yet unrecognized, artists. Ernest Meissonier, Puvis de Chavannes, Auguste Rodin and others rejected this proposal and left the organization.
