Victor Auguste, Baron Duperré
Victor Auguste Duperré (4 August 1825 – 26 March 1900) was a French naval commander. He was born in Paris, and served as Commander of the Naval Division of the Western Coasts of Africa, effectively Colonial head of Gabon ("Colony of Gorée and Dependencies") between 1869 and 1870. Siméon Bourgois was a 19th-century French Navy vice-admiral who was especially involved in the development of early submarines. He was born in Thionville, Lorraine, on 26 March 1815, and died in Paris on 24 December 1887. He held the rank of captain when he presented together with Charles Brun his project for the submarine ''Plongeur'' in 1858, and when he created the plans in 1860, under the code name Q00. Jules François Émile Krantz (29 December 1821 in Givet – 25 February 1914 near Toulon) was a French naval officer and politician. In Vietnamese royal records, he was referred as ''Ca Răng'' (哥𪘵). Life He left the École navale in 1837, initially serving off the west African coast and then in the Mediterranean and Brazil. He was professor of navigation on board the ''Borda'' (1852). He commanded the ''Ténare'' during the Crimean War, taking part in the attacks on Sebastopol and the Kinbourn peninsula. He was then sent to Vietnam (1858–59) and the China Sea and Japan (1862–64, where he took part in the bombardment of Pei-Ho). He was then commander of the gunnery-school ship ''Louis XIV'' at Cherbourg (1869). Louis Charles Georges Jules Lafont (24 April 1825 – 31 January 1908) was a French naval officer who was Governor of Cochinchina from 1877 to 1879. He joined the navy at the age of sixteen, rose steadily through the ranks, and served in Vietnam, the Philippines, West Africa, the Crimea, the Baltic, the Indian Ocean, China and East Africa. During the Franco-Prussian War of 1870–71 he was given command of land troops. After returning from Cochinchina he held various senior naval commands, including commander in chief of the training squadron from 1885 to 1886. (; "Gorée Island"; Wolof: Beer Dun) is one of the 19 (i.e. districts) of the city of Dakar, Senegal. It is an island located at sea from the main harbour of Dakar (), famous as a destination for people interested in the Atlantic slave trade although its actual role in the history of the slave trade is the subject of dispute. Its population as of the 2013 census was 1,680 inhabitants, giving a density of , which is only half the average density of the city of Dakar. Cochinchina or Cochin-China (, ; vi, Đàng Trong (17th century - 18th century, Việt Nam (1802-1831), Đại Nam (1831-1862), Nam Kỳ (1862-1945); km, កូសាំងស៊ីន, Kosăngsin; french: Cochinchine; ) is a historical exonym for part of Vietnam, depending on the contexts. Sometimes it referred to the whole of Vietnam, but it was commonly used to refer to the region south of the Gianh River. In the 17th and 18th centuries, Vietnam was divided between the Trịnh lords to the north and the Nguyễn lords to the south. The two domains bordered each other on the Son–Gianh River.
