Veronica Chater
Veronica Chater is an American author and memoirist. Chater wrote a memoir of her childhood, ''Waiting for the Apocalypse: A Memoir of Faith and Family'', highlighting her father's obsession with traditional Catholicism and belief in a coming holy chastisement, and her ever-growing family's consequential spiral into poverty. Chater was one of nine children and currently lives in Berkley, California. American Literature
American literature is literature written or produced in the United States of America and in the colonies that preceded it. The American literary tradition thus is part of the broader tradition of English-language literature, but also includes literature of other traditions produced in the United States and in other immigrant languages. Furthermore, a rich tradition of oral storytelling exists amongst Native American tribes. The American Revolutionary Period (1775–1783) is notable for the political writings of Benjamin Franklin, Alexander Hamilton, Thomas Paine, and Thomas Jefferson. Memoir
A memoir (; , ) is any nonfiction narrative writing based in the author's personal memories. The assertions made in the work are thus understood to be factual. While memoir has historically been defined as a subcategory of biography or autobiography since the late 20th century, the genre is differentiated in form, presenting a narrowed focus. A biography or autobiography tells the story "of a life", while a memoir often tells the story of a particular event or time, such as touchstone moments and turning points from the author's life. Chastisement
Chastisement is the infliction of corporal punishment as defined by law. Minors English common law allowed parents and others who have "lawful control or charge" of a child to use "moderate and reasonable" chastisement or correction. In the 1860 Eastbourne manslaughter case, Alexander Cockburn as Chief Justice ruled: "By the law of England, a parent ... may for the purpose of correcting what is evil in the child, inflict moderate and reasonable corporal punishment, always, however, with this condition, that it is moderate and reasonable." It was left to the courts to decide what is meant by "moderate and reasonable" in any particular case. Macaw
Macaws are a group of New World parrots that are long-tailed and often colorful. They are popular in aviculture or as companion parrots, although there are conservation concerns about several species in the wild. Atheist Film Festival
The Atheist Film Festival was an annual event that ran from 2009-2014. When it launched, it was the world’s first film festival dedicated to showcasing feature films, documentaries, shorts and animated cinema created especially for the atheist community. It was founded by David Fitzgerald, Hank Pellissier and Veronica Chater and focused on films recognizing science, the distinction between church and state and more and as of 2012 was the only explicitly atheist film festival. The Festival grew over the years from small films that the founders rented from Netflix to VIP receptions, and in its fifth year, programming at San Francisco's Roxie Theater. In 2014 the founders announced the festival's end.
