Vavdos Folklore Collection
Vavdos is an old mountain village in Chalkidiki, Central Macedonia, Greece. It is 40 km from Thessaloniki and accessed from the Thessaloniki-Polygyros provincial road. In the summer of 1997 the Association of Vavdonians in Thessaloniki and the Folklore and Ethnological Museum of Macedonia and Thrace assembled a folklore collection, which is housed in the junior school, in a room designed for the purpose with its own separate entrance. The exhibits were donated by the villagers. The exhibition presents the traditional life of Vavdos through artefacts and photographs from the late nineteenth and early twentieth century. There is a reconstruction of a traditional household, including a loom in one corner used to clothe those living in the house, clothing (mainly female) in another corner, a sitting-room with a fireplace, a wash-stand, a cradle, a bed and a wardrobe, a traditional kitchen, and a cellar containing bread, oil, wine, and objects connected with them. Chalkidiki
Chalkidiki (; el, Χαλκιδική , also spelled Halkidiki, is a peninsula and regional unit of Greece, part of the region of Central Macedonia, in the geographic region of Macedonia in Northern Greece. The autonomous Mount Athos region constitutes the easternmost part of the peninsula, but not of the regional unit. Polygyros
Polygyros (Greek: Πολύγυρος) is a town and municipality in Central Macedonia, Greece. It is the capital of Chalkidiki. Geography Polygyros town (pop. 6,121 at the 2011 census) is built in the shape of an amphitheatre on a plateau on the south west side of the mountain Cholomontas. It is south of Greek National Road 16 (Thessaloniki - Arnaia). Polygyros is located SE of Thessaloniki, NE of Nea Moudania, NW of Sithonia and SW of Arnaia. Folklore And Ethnological Museum Of Macedonia And Thrace
Folklore is shared by a particular group of people; it encompasses the traditions common to that culture, subculture or group. This includes oral traditions such as Narrative, tales, legends, proverbs and jokes. They include material culture, ranging from traditional building styles common to the group. Folklore also includes Tradition, customary lore, taking actions for folk beliefs, the forms and rituals of celebrations such as Christmas and weddings, folk dances and Rite of passage, initiation rites. Sericulture
Sericulture, or silk farming, is the cultivation of silkworms to produce silk. Although there are several commercial species of silkworms, ''Bombyx mori'' (the caterpillar of the domestic silkmoth) is the most widely used and intensively studied silkworm. Magnesite
Magnesite is a mineral with the chemical formula (magnesium carbonate). Iron, manganese, cobalt, and nickel may occur as admixtures, but only in small amounts. Occurrence Magnesite occurs as veins in and an alteration product of ultramafic rocks, serpentinite and other magnesium rich rock types in both contact and regional metamorphic terrains. These magnesites are often cryptocrystalline and contain silica in the form of opal or chert.
