Vaughan Somers
Vaughan Somers (born 27 May 1951) is an Australian professional golfer. Somers was born in Queensland, Australia. Somers had modest success as a professional golfer, winning the 1975 North Coast Open and the 1985 Ford Dealers South Australian Open. He also had some other top three finishes including runner-up in both the 1983 KLM Dutch Open and the 1986 Victorian Open, and third place in the 1987 Australian Masters. Somers played in multiple Open Championships, making the cut four times with his best finish a tie for 21st place in the 1986 Open Championship. Somers is now a father to two sons and has worked as the General Manager of the Melbourne Golf Academy (MGA), located on the Melbourne Sandbelt. John Lister (golfer)
John Malcolm Lister (born 9 March 1947) is a professional golfer from New Zealand. Golf career Lister was one of the leading players on the Australia and New Zealand circuits during the 1970s. Between 1972 and 1977, he was the leading player on the New Zealand Tour winning ten of twenty-five events. He won the Garden City Classic four consecutive times (1972–1975). His four consecutive wins in a professional tour event is a record that he shares with Tiger Woods, who won the Bay Hill Invitational from 2000–2003. Lister also enjoyed success around the world. In 1970, he won twice on the British PGA circuit and finished the season in fourth place on the Order of Merit. At the end of the year he qualified for the PGA Tour. Hennessy Cognac Cup
The Hennessy Cognac Cup was a biennial team golf tournament contested from 1976 to 1984. The contests in 1976, 1978 and 1980 were between teams of professional male golfers; one team representing Great Britain and Ireland, the other team representing Continental Europe. There was also an earlier event, in 1974, played at Sotogrande in Spain, not sponsored by Hennessy. In 1982 a third team, the Rest of the World, was added and the event became a stroke-play contest with an individual prize. The 1984 event was run on a different basis, with 10 national teams competing. The tournament was played in years when there was no Ryder Cup. The first matches between a team representing Great Britain and Ireland and a team representing Continental Europe were played for the Joy Cup from 1954 to 1958. The South Australian PGA Championship was a professional golf tournament played in South Australia. It was first held in 1927. History The first South Australian Professional Championship was held in 1927 and was a 72-hole stroke-play event. It was won by Rufus Stewart, four ahead of Fergus McMahon. Stewart had recently won the Australian Open. McMahon won in 1928, 1929 and 1930, and as a three-time winner he permanently kept the trophy that had been presented in 1927. With only a small number of professional in the state, there were only four different winners in the first 15 championships. Stewart won 6 times and McMahon 5 times, while Alf Toogood won twice, before he moved to Tasmania, and Willie Harvey also won twice, in 1938 and 1940. Terry Gale
Terry R. Gale (born 7 June 1946) is an Australian professional golfer. Professional career Gale had a successful amateur career before turning professional at a relatively advanced age in 1976. From the mid-1970s to the early 1990s he won regularly on the PGA Tour of Australasia, the Japan Golf Tour, and the Asia Golf Circuit. Once he turned 50, he joined the European Seniors Tour, where he won seven tournaments. His best season on that tour was 2003, when he finished third on the Order of Merit. The Western Australian Open, also known as the WA Open, is a golf tournament on the PGA Tour of Australasia. It had been a tour event every year since 2009 with the exception of 2019. History The first Western Australian Amateur Championship was held in 1911. This consisted of a 36-hole stroke-play qualification stage, played in a single day, followed by match-play to determine the champion. The leading four players in the stroke-play qualified in 1911, increasing to 8 in 1912. Mike Cahill (golfer)
Michael F. Cahill (born 10 December 1951) is an Australian professional golfer. In 1971, Cahill had one of the best years in the history of Victorian amateur golf, becoming the first player to win the Victorian Junior Amateur and Victorian Senior Amateur in the same year. Shortly thereafter, Cahill turned pro and quickly had success, winning the 1977 Australian PGA Championship. In the ensuing years, however, citing personal problems and "poor practice habits," Cahill's game declined. In 1980, however, Cahill renewed his relationship with former mentor Kevin Hartley and his game improved, culminating with a three wins in Western Australia in May 1982.
