Valley Christian School is a private K–12 school in Youngstown, Ohio. History and background Valley Christian was founded as Youngstown Christian in 1975, and is religiously affiliated with the Assemblies of God Christian denomination. It is sponsored by local Assemblies of God Churches, primarily "Highway Tabernacle". Its mission statement is to prepare students for a life of ministry to Jesus Christ. It is known for being the only school in the Mahoning County area to have a United States Academic Decathlon team and for winning the Small School state championship twice in USAD. The Academic Decathlon (also called AcDec, AcaDeca or AcaDec) is an annual high school academic competition organized by the non-profit United States Academic Decathlon (USAD). The competition consists of seven objective multiple choice tests, two subjective performance events, and an essay. Academic Decathlon was created by Robert Peterson in 1968 for local schools in Orange County, California and was expanded nationally in 1981 by Robert Peterson, William Patton, first President of the new USAD Board; and Phillip Bardos, Chairman of the new USAD Board. Portage Trail Conference
The Portage Trail Conference or PTC is an association of six high schools and their associated middle/ junior high schools located in the northeast region of the U.S. State of Ohio. Three member schools are in Portage County, two are in Stark County, and one each is located in Summit and Trumbull counties. The conference officially began play in August 2005 with 16 member schools divided into two eight-school divisions based on enrollment, with the smaller schools in the County Division and the larger schools in the Metro Division. Games against teams in the opposite division did not count as conference games. Between 2013 and 2017, the conference experienced a number of membership changes, with four schools leaving and three schools joining.
