Víctor Jara (album)
''Víctor Jara'' is the second solo album by Chilean singer-songwriter Víctor Jara, released in 1967. It continues the ''nueva canción'' (new song) style of politically conscious folk music that he had established with his first solo namesake album, in 1966. The songs of ''Víctor Jara'' change from Jara's earlier autobiographical lyrics to topics of general concern for all of Latin America, growing closer to the style of Violeta Parra. Parra died shortly before the album was released, and Jara, her student and friend, stepped forward to fill the political void. After this album, Jara's subsequent work would become more explicitly political, espousing left-wing activism to advocate or protest specific political issues. The album includes the controversial song, "El aparecido" (The Ghost), which was written about Che Guevara months before the Argentinian revolutionary was killed. Ricardo Eliécer Neftalí Reyes Basoalto (12 July 1904 – 23 September 1973), better known by his pen name and, later, legal name Pablo Neruda (; ), was a Chilean poet-diplomat and politician who won the 1971 Nobel Prize in Literature. A lasso ( or ), also called lariat, riata, or reata (all from Castilian, la reata 're-tied rope'), is a loop of rope designed as a restraint to be thrown around a target and tightened when pulled. It is a well-known tool of the Spanish and Mexican cowboy, then adopted by the cowboys of the United States. The word is also a verb; ''to lasso'' is to throw the loop of rope around something. El Aparecido
''El aparecido'' ("The appeared", also translated as "The ghost") is a Chilean song originally written and recorded by Víctor Jara which was included in the 1967 album ''Victor Jara''. The lyrics tell the story of a man who was persecuted for his political ideologies, often the man in the song is attributed to Che Guevara, an Argentine guerrilla fighter. Because of this, the Communist Party of Chile criticized Jara, as the party was trying to establish a socialist government via democratic means, and not through armed guerrillas. Sergio Ortega (composer)
Sergio Ortega Alvarado (February 2, 1938 – September 15, 2003) was a Chilean composer and pianist. Biography Ortega was born in Antofagasta, Chile. He studied composition with Roberto Falabella and with Gustavo Becerra-Schmidt in the National Conservatory at the University of Chile. After graduating, he worked in the Institute of Musical Extension and was a sound engineer for six years in the university's experimental theater, Teatro Antonio Varas. Ortega was a force for the leftist movement in Chile. Patricio Castillo (folk Musician)
Patricio Castillo (born 1946, Cautín, Chile) is a Chilean musician and former member of the Chilean folk music group Quilapayún. He is well known for his collaborations with the Chilean singer-songwriter, Víctor Jara. Biography Castillo was born into a musical family; both of his parents were classical musicians and pedagogues, his father a violinist and his mother a pianist. Early in his life Castillo defined his aspirations to pursue a career in music as his parents had done. Eduardo Guillermo Carrasco Pirard (born July 2, 1940 in Santiago) is a Chilean musician, university professor of philosophy, author, and one of the founders of the Chilean folk music group Quilapayún - and the group's musical director from 1969 to 1989.
