Väinö Rafael Malmivaara (7 November 1879 – 13 November 1958) was the Lutheran Bishop of Oulu from 1943 to 1954. Väinö Linna (; 20 December 1920 – 21 April 1992) was a Finnish author. He gained literary fame with his third novel, ''Tuntematon sotilas'' ( ''The Unknown Soldier'', published in 1954), and consolidated his position with the trilogy ''Täällä Pohjantähden alla'' (''Under the North Star'', published in 1959–1963 and translated into English by Richard Impola). Both have been adapted to a film format on several occasions; ''The Unknown Soldier'' was first adapted into a film in 1955 and ''Under the North Star'' in 1968 as ''Here, Beneath the North Star'', both directed by Edvin Laine. Väinö Liikkanen (1 November 1903 – 15 October 1957) was a Finnish cross-country skier who competed in the 1932 Winter Olympics. He won a silver medal in the 50 km and finished ninth in the 18 km event. He also won two medals at the FIS Nordic World Ski Championships with a gold in the 4 × 10 km relay in 1935 and a bronze in the 18 km in 1933; in 1933 he also placed fourth over 50 km, despite winning the 50 km race at the national championships. Väinö Leskinen
Väinö Olavi Leskinen (8 March 1917, in Helsinki – 8 March 1972, in Helsinki) was a Finnish politician, minister and a member of the parliament from Social Democratic Party of Finland. He is perceived as one of the major Finnish social democratic politicians of the 1950s and 1960s. Sports career and personal life Before his political career Leskinen was a successful swimmer in the association of Helsinki Workers' Swimmers. He won the 200 and 400 meter breaststroke events at the 1937 Workers' Olympiad in Antwerp. Leskinen was later the Secretary General of the Finnish Workers' Sports Federation 1940-1943 and the chairman 1951–1955. Leskinen fought in the Winter and Continuation Wars. He was wounded in 1941. Väinö Lehmus (11 January 1886 – 6 April 1936) was a Finnish stage and film and radio actor of the early 20th century. Career Born Väinö Armas Lind, his father was a tailor. He initially attended trade school before studying for a business career. He began his acting career at the Tampere Theatre in 1906 and from 1915 to 1917 toured Finland performing in comedic operettas, often in the company of actor Iivari Kainulainen. Lehmus also served as the director for many working class theaters and was the theater director for the Vyborg Worker's Theatre from 1927 to 1928. He was also the property manager and stage director for Harjula Oy, a children's educational facility in Lohja. Väinö David Lassila (9 March 1896 – 11 April 1939) was a Finnish physician, anatomist and anthropologist who was a Professor of Anatomy at the University of Helsinki. He was the leading authority of the Finnish racial studies, but since the mid-1930s, Lassila dissociated himself from racial theories and became one of the prominent figures of Finland's human rights movement. Life and career Lassila graduated from the Pori Lyceum in 1914 and studied medicine at the University of Helsinki. Since 1918, Lassila worked as an assistant at the Department of Anatomy completing his medical degree in 1922. Lassila's early work was influenced by the professor Yrjö Kajava and the Swedish anatomist Gustaf Retzius. In his 1921 doctoral thesis, Lassila studied Sámi skulls collected from Lapland in the late 19th Century. Väinö Ilmari Kunnas (12 April 1896 Vyborg - 10 February 1929, Helsinki) was a Finnish Expressionist painter. During his brief career, he went from Expressionism to experiment with more abstract modern styles. His major works consist of portraits of cultural personalities and depictions of the urban environment. Life His parents were the painters Mikko Kunnas (originally Keränen) and Helena Varonen.
