Vytina
Vytina ( el, Βυτίνα, ''Vytína'') is a mountain village and a former municipality in Arcadia, Peloponnese, Greece. It is considered a traditional settlement. Since the 2011 local government reform it is part of the municipality Gortynia, of which it is a municipal unit. The municipal unit has an area of 139.309 km2. The seat of the municipality was the village Vytina. The village is located at the foot of the mountain range Mainalo. The area produces marble, a variation called the Black of Vytina. Vytina is 10 km east of Levidi, 15 km northeast of Dimitsana and 24 km northwest of Tripoli. The Greek National Road 74 (Tripoli - Pyrgos) passes through Vytina. The ancient Arcadian city Methydrion was located near Vytina. Magouliana
Magouliana ( el, Μαγούλιανα) is a mountain village and a community in the municipal unit of Vytina, Arcadia, Greece. In 2011, it had a population of 117 for the village and 119 for the community, which includes the small village Pan. It sits at 1,365 m above sea level, under the ruined Argyrokastro Castle. Magouliana is 3 km southwest of Lasta, 5 km west of Vytina and 12 km northeast of Dimitsana. It is considered a traditional settlement. Methydrio
Methydrio ( el, Μεθύδριο, before 1927: Νεμνίτσα - ''Nemnitsa'') is a village in the municipal unit of Vytina, Arcadia, Greece. In 2011, it had a population of 11. It sits at 1,060 m above sea level, at the foot of the Mainalo mountains. It is 4 km south of Vytina. It was named after the ancient city Methydrium, the remains of which have been discovered near the village. Population History Ancient Methydrion was a city of ancient Arcadia. According to Pausanias it was founded by Orchomenus, son of Lycaon. In the 2nd century AD, it was not a city anymore, but a village belonging to Megalopolis. It was situated between the rivers Maloetas and Mylaon. It had a temple to Poseidon. The remains of ancient Methydrion have been excavated in 1910. National Road 74 ( el, Εθνική Οδός 74, abbreviated as EO74) is a single carriageway road in southern Greece. Ioannis Dimakopoulos
Ioannis Dimakopoulos ( el, Ιωάννης Δημακόπουλος, 1833/35–1866) was an officer of the Hellenic Army from Arcadia. He participated as a volunteer in the Cretan Revolution of 1866 and he was killed during the holocaust of Arkadi Monastery. Panayotis Potagos
Panayotis Potagos (Greek: Παναγιώτης Ποταγός; 1838 – 1903) was a Greek physician and explorer born in Vytina. Potagos began his travels in 1867, visiting Iraq, Iran, Afghanistan, Gobi Desert, and India. He arrived in Egypt in 1876, ascending the Nile River to southern Sudan and then crossed the Congo-Nile Divide into the Congo River basin through what is now the Central African Republic and finally reached the Uele River in 1877. He was the first European to reach the Mbomou and Uele rivers from the north. He published an account of his travels, which was translated into French. He died in the village of Nymfes, Corfu.
