VUUR ("fire", "passion" or "drive") is a Dutch progressive metal band formed in 2016 by singer and lyricist Anneke van Giersbergen and musicians she has worked with previously in bands like The Gentle Storm or her own solo band. The band is intended to express van Giersbergen's heavy metal side, as opposed to the softer side of her solo career. They released their debut album ''In This Moment We Are Free – Cities'' in October 2017. History Singer Marcela Bovio was initially part of the line-up. However, when the recording of the band's debut album started, Bovio and Van Giersbergen "wanted to take very different directions when it came to the sound and approach of the vocals". After failing to find a compromise that would satisfy both creatively, it was decided that Bovio would leave the band, as the two were afraid that doing otherwise would leave both regretful and hurt their friendship. In This Moment We Are Free – Cities
''In This Moment We Are Free – Cities'' is the debut studio album by progressive metal band VUUR. It was released on 20 October 2017, via Inside Out Music. Apart from the regular edition, the album was released on special editions including a CD digipak and a gatefold 2LP + CD (including etching on side D). Band leader and vocalist Anneke van Giersbergen viewed past collaborator Devin Townsend as an influence on the album. Marcela Bovio was initially going to act as secondary vocalist for the album, but left the band mid-production due to divergences about the direction the vocals should take. Anna Maria "Anneke" van Giersbergen (born 8 March 1973) is a Dutch singer, songwriter and guitarist who became known worldwide as the lead singer for the rock band The Gathering between 1994 and 2007. She also has a solo career. The project was originally called Agua de Annique, but now goes by her own name. A frequent collaborator of Arjen Anthony Lucassen, she portrayed main characters in the albums ''Into the Electric Castle'', '' 01011001'' and ''The Theater Equation'' by his project Ayreon. In 2014 they collaborated on a project called The Gentle Storm, which produced an album titled '' The Diary'' that was released in 2015. Johan Van Stratum
Johan van Stratum (born 15 April 1982) is a Dutch bassist and a member of the progressive metal band VUUR. He was the bassist of Stream of Passion, and one of the two founding members to stay in the band until it disbanded in 2016. He also played bass live for Ayreon and The Gentle Storm. In July 2021 he was announced as the bass player of German power metal band Blind Guardian. Career Van Stratum started music at age 14 by singing, before being pushed to play bass by his friends. His first instrument was a brandless bass guitar brought for 50 euros. He considers his biggest influences Tim Commerford of Rage Against the Machine, Chris Wolstenholme of Muse, and Reginald Arvizu of Korn. Ed Warby
Edward R. Warby (born 7 March 1968) is a Dutch musician, best known as the drummer for death metal band Gorefest and progressive rock/metal project Ayreon. He also appeared in the band Agressor in 1982 and joined the Eindhoven-based metal band Elegy in 1987. Warby moved to Gorefest in 1992, where he replaced the former drummer just before the recording sessions of "False", he had to learn all themes and develop his work in just two weeks, which he managed to achieve in a matter so fast that producer Colin Richardson nicknamed him ''Fast Eddy''. After Gorefest split up in 1999, he took part in the re-united Gorefest in 2004. Marcela Bovio
Marcela Alejandra Bovio García (born October 17, 1979) is a Mexican singer and violinist who is currently a member of the Dutch symphonic death metal band MaYaN. In 1995, she joined Hydra, a Mexican metal band, singing and playing violin. In 1999 they released an EP called "''Bosquejo''". After leaving them, Bovio co-founded the Mexican experimental rock band Elfonía in 2001, which was active until 2006. In 2003, she responded to a "casting call" by Dutch musician Arjen Anthony Lucassen for relatively unknown singers, who chose her to play the character of Wife in the Ayreon album ''The Human Equation''. Stream of Passion is a Dutch progressive metal band with symphonic and gothic influences founded by guitarist and composer Arjen Anthony Lucassen and Mexican singer, violinist, and lyricist Marcela Bovio. They have released four studio albums. Elfonía
Elfonía was an experimental rock band with elements of progressive and ambient music. It was founded by Alejandro Millán and Marcela Bovio in 2001 following the leaving of their previous band, Hydra. The band's line-up was extended in 2003 for purposes of a major music festival held in Monterrey, Mexico with Roberto Quintanilla on lead guitar, Pablo González on bass guitar and Javier Garagarza on drums. By the end of the year, Elfonía independently produced their self-titled first studio album which marked their breakthrough into mainstream music. In November 2003, Marcela was invited by Arjen Anthony Lucassen to perform vocals on Ayreon's album ''The Human Equation''. Ayreon is a musical project by Dutch songwriter, singer, musician and record producer Arjen Anthony Lucassen. Ayreon's music is described as progressive rock, progressive metal and power metal sometimes combined with genres such as folk, electronica, experimental and classical music. The majority of Ayreon's albums are dubbed "rock operas" (or "metal operas") because the albums contain complex storylines featuring a host of characters, usually with each one being represented by a unique vocalist. Gorefest
Gorefest was a Dutch death metal band from Goes in Zeeland. It was founded in 1989 by Jan-Chris de Koeijer, Frank Harthoorn, Alex van Schaik and Marc Hoogendoorn. History Within two months of existence Gorefest recorded their first demo. A Dutch independent label, Foundation 2000, signed them for one album. Before recording ''Mindloss'', they released another demo in 1990, which received positive feedback.
