Vriesea Splendens
''Vriesea splendens'', or flaming sword, is a species of flowering plant in the family Bromeliaceae, subfamily Tillandsioideae. Native to Trinidad, eastern Venezuela and the GuianasSmith, L.B. & R. J. Downs. 1977. Tillandsioideae (Bromeliaceae), Part II. Flora Neotropica, Monograph 14(2): 663–1492 these plants were introduced to Europe in 1840. This species of '' Vriesea'' features smooth-margined foliage with brown bands growing in a rosette, usually producing a bright red inflorescence in a flattened spike. Tillandsioideae
Tillandsioideae is a subfamily of plants in the bromeliad family Bromeliaceae. This subfamily contains the greatest number of species (about 1,400). Most are epiphytic or lithophytic, growing in trees or on rocks where they absorb water and nutrients from the air. Spanish moss of the genus ''Tillandsia'' is a well-known species. Bromeliads in the genera ''Guzmania'' and ''Vriesea'' are the more commonly cultivated members of this subfamily. Description Nearly all bromeliads have specialized cell groups called trichomes which form scales on the foliage. Vriesea
''Vriesea'' is a genus of flowering plants in the botanical family Bromeliaceae, subfamily Tillandsioideae. The genus name is for Willem Hendrik de Vriese, Dutch botanist, physician (1806–1862). Its species are widespread over Mexico, Central America, South America and the West Indies. Containing some of the largest bromeliad species, these tropical plants harbor a wide variety of insect fauna, unlike the smaller ''Catopsis'' species. In the wild, frogs may go through their whole life cycle in a bromeliad. This genus is closely related to ''Guzmania.'' Both ''Guzmania'' and ''Vriesea'' have dry capsules that split open to release parachute like seeds similar to the Dandelion (''Taraxacum'' sp.). It is based on assessment of the plants' performance under UK growing conditions.
