Voruta (newspaper)
''Voruta'' is a Lithuanian weekly historical newspaper, founded in 1989 by Juozas Vercinkevičius. Preparations for publishing Voruta started in 1988 and first trial issue was published in 1989. Edvardas Gudavičius, Regina Žepkaitė, Antanas Tyla, Arūnas Bubnys, Vincas Martinkėnas, Zigmas Zinkevičius, Nastazija Kairiūkštytė, Stasys Buchaveckas, Kęstutis Makariūnas, Antanas Suraučius, Juozas Vaina, Kazimieras Garšva, Evaldas Gečiauskas among other authors published their works in Voruta. Newspaper is named after Voruta, a mythical capital of the Lithuania established in the time of king Mindaugas in the 13th century. Vilnija
Vilnius Region is the territory in present-day Lithuania and Belarus that was originally inhabited by ethnic Baltic tribes and was a part of Lithuania proper, but came under East Slavic and Polish cultural influences over time. The territory included Vilnius, the historical capital of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. Lithuania, after declaring independence from the Russian Empire, claimed the Vilnius Region based on this historical legacy. Poland argued for the right of self-determination of the local Polish-speaking population. As a result, throughout the interwar period the control over the area was disputed between Poland and Lithuania. Mindaugas
Mindaugas (german: Myndowen, la, Mindowe, orv, Мендог, be, Міндоўг, pl, Mendog, c. 1203–1263) is the first known Grand Duke of Lithuania and the only crowned King of Lithuania. Little is known of his origins, early life, or rise to power; he is mentioned in a 1219 treaty as an elder duke, and in 1236 as the leader of all the Lithuanians. The contemporary and modern sources discussing his ascent mention strategic marriages along with banishment or murder of his rivals. He extended his domain into regions southeast of Lithuania proper during the 1230s and 1240s. In 1250 or 1251, during the course of internal power struggles, he was baptised as a Roman Catholic; this action enabled him to establish an alliance with the Livonian Order, a long-standing antagonist of the Lithuanians. Voruta
Voruta may have been the capital city of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania and the Kingdom of Lithuania during the reign of king Mindaugas in the 13th century. Voruta is mentioned briefly in a written source only once and its exact location is unknown. Despite all the uncertainties, the concept of Voruta is well-known and popular in Lithuania. Historiography Mindaugas, the first and the only crowned Lithuanian king, defended himself in Voruta during an internal war against his nephews Tautvilas and Edivydas and Duke of Samogitia Vykintas in 1251. This information, taken from the Hypatian Chronicle, is the only recorded message about Voruta. A castle of Mindaugas was mentioned on two more occasions, but neither its name nor location was specified. It is unclear whether these brief mentions referred to the same location. Kazimieras Garšva (born November 11, 1950 in Linkuva, near Pakruojis) is a Lithuanian linguist, and the leader of the cultural " Vilnija" organisation. Biography From 1968 to 1973 Garšva studied philology and Lithuanian literature at Vilnius University, and from 1973 to 1976 he was a student at Moscow State University. Edvardas Gudavičius
Edvardas Gudavičius (6 September 1929 – 27 January 2020) was a Lithuanian historian. He was known as one of the best historians in Lithuania specializing in the early history of Grand Duchy of Lithuania. In 1953, he graduated from Kaunas Polytechnic Institute with a degree in engineering. Gudavičius started his career as a mechanic at one of the factories in Kaunas, but in 1958 moved to Vilnius. In 1962, he enrolled to Vilnius State University of Vincas Kapsukas seeking a degree in history. In 1991, he earned the title of professor. He was a full member of Lithuanian Academy of Sciences. To the wider public he was mostly known for his work together with Alfredas Bumblauskas on the long-running TV show ''Būtovės slėpiniai'', a talk show dedicated to topics of the history of Lithuania. Gudavičius was a frequent contributor to various reference works, including the 25-volume ''Visuotinė lietuvių enciklopedija''. He also published works on the Statutes of Lithuania. ...
