Volleyball South Africa
Volleyball South Africa (VSA) is the governing body for volleyball in South Africa and is responsible for the administration of the South African national volleyball teams (both men's and women's). VSA has been an affiliate of FIVB and CAVB since 1992. Its offices are located in Johannesburg, and its president is Anthony Mokoena. The organization holds its presidential elections every 4 years; the next election is set to occur in 2020. History In 1992, it was decided that a single governing body was needed to regulate volleyball in South Africa. VSA was the first national volleyball federation in South Africa to include members of all races. It was a merge of the separate white and black controlled leagues that had been split due to the Apartheid, the racist regime that existed in South Africa between the late 1940s to the early 1990s. South Africa Men's National Volleyball Team
The South Africa men's national volleyball team represents South Africa in international volleyball competitions and friendly matches. The team has competed in the biennial African Men's Volleyball Championship eight times since 1993. Currently, the team is in joint last (ninth) position on the medals table of the previously mentioned championship along with Guinea, having won only one bronze medal in 2001. History After first entering the African Volleyball Championship in 1993, South Africa finished in 8th place out of 10 teams. After missing the 1995 championship, the team returned in 1997, finishing 7th out of 8. South Africa competed again in 2001, this time finishing 3rd out of only 5 teams. African Volleyball Confederation
The African Volleyball Confederation (French: ''Confédération Africaine de Volleyball'', or CAVB) is the continental governing body for the sports of volleyball in Africa. Its headquarters are located in Rabat, Morocco. Profile The CAVB was the last confederation to be created: it was established in 1972, when the FIVB turned its five Volleyball Zone Commissions into continental confederations. The African Volleyball Commission had been founded in 1967. Although the national federation of Egypt was involved in the founding of the FIVB in 1947, the sport of volleyball remains essentially amateur in Africa, even in countries which maintain consistent Olympic programmes, such as South Africa or Kenya. The Black Consciousness Movement (BCM) was a grassroots anti-Apartheid activist movement that emerged in South Africa in the mid-1960s out of the political vacuum created by the jailing and banning of the African National Congress and Pan Africanist Congress leadership after the Sharpeville Massacre in 1960.
