Bert Vogelstein
Bert Vogelstein (born 1949) is director of the Ludwig Center, Clayton Professor of Oncology and Pathology and a Howard Hughes Medical Institute investigator at The Johns Hopkins Medical School and Sidney Kimmel Comprehensive Cancer Center. A pioneer in the field of cancer genomics, his studies on colorectal cancers revealed that they result from the sequential accumulation of mutations in oncogenes and tumor suppressor genes. These studies now form the paradigm for modern cancer research and provided the basis for the notion of the somatic evolution of cancer. Research In the 1980s, Vogelstein developed new experimental approaches to study human tumors. His studies of various stages of colorectal cancers led him to propose a specific model for human tumorigenesis in 1988. Julie Braun-Vogelstein
Julie Braun-Vogelstein (1883–1971) was a German-born American art historian, author, editor, and journalist. Biography She was born in Stettin in Germany (now Szczecin, Poland). Julie Vogelstein was the daughter of rabbi Heinemann Vogelstein and sister of rabbi :de:Hermann Vogelstein, and industrialists Ludwig Vogelstein and :de:Theodor Vogelstein. She studied art history and Egyptology at the University of Munich and University of Berlin. In 1919 she received her PhD from the University of Heidelberg. In 1935 she left Germany for France and later the United States. In 1936 she went to California, and she lived in Carmel from time-to-time thereafter. She was a member of the board of the Leo Baeck Institute. She was the secretary of Heinrich Braun (1854–1927), and became his second wife after the death of his wife Lily Braun (1865–1916). Heinemann Vogelstein (February 13, 1841 - August 4, 1911) was a German rabbi and leader of Reform Judaism in Germany. Biography Heinemann Vogelstein was born in Lippe on February 13, 1841, the son of Julie (née Adler) and Israel Vogelstein. In 1859, he began his studies at University of Wroclaw and then at the Jewish Theological Seminary of Breslau where he received his PhD in 1865 (his thesis was entitled Die Alexandersage bei den Orientalen''). Carl Christian Vogel von Vogelstein (26 June 1788, Wildenfels, Electoral Saxony – 4 March 1868, Munich), born ''Vogel'', was a German painter. Life Son of the child and portrait painter Christian Leberecht Vogel, Vogel was trained early in life by his father. From 1804 he visited the Kunstakademie in Dresden, where he copied many paintings in the Gemäldegalerie and also produced the first of his own portraits. In 1807 he replied to an invitation from Baron von Löwenstern, whose children he had taught in Dresden, to come to Tartu, Dorpat in Livonia. In 1808 he moved to Saint Petersburg, where he set up a studio in the princely and successfully worked producing portraits of nobles and diplomats.
