Vittore Ghiliani
Vittore Ghiliani (14 May 1812 – 17 May 1878), was an Italian entomologist From 1832 until his death he worked as an Assistant (Curator) in the Zoological Museum of Turin where he was responsible for the Hymenoptera and Coleoptera collections of Maximilian Spinola and the Ferdinando Breme collection of Coleoptera and Diptera. Vittore Ghiliani was an "Adviser" of the Italian Entomological Society from 1869 to 1871 and Vice-President from 1871 until 1878. He published a series of scientific papers on the Coleoptera of Sardinia, Sicily, Spain and Brasil and edited by Lorenzo Camerano an important list of species of Coleoptera from Piedmont. Order (biology)
Order ( la, wikt:ordo#Latin, ordo) is one of the eight major hierarchical taxonomic ranks in Linnaean taxonomy. It is classified between Family_(biology), family and Class_(biology), class. In biological classification, the order is a taxonomic rank used in the classification of organisms and recognized by the nomenclature codes. An immediately higher rank, superorder, is sometimes added directly above order, with suborder directly beneath order. An order can also be defined as a group of related families. What does and does not belong to each order is determined by a taxonomist, as is whether a particular order should be recognized at all. Lorenzo Camerano
Lorenzo Camerano (9 April 1856 Biella – 22 November 1917 Turin) was an Italian herpetologist and entomologist. Born in Biella in 1856 he studied in Bologna and Torino, where he settled in order to take, between 1871 and 1873, a painting course held by Fontanesi at the local Art Academy. Camerano worked as a painter for the Turin Zoology Museum, then directed by the great zoologist Michele Lessona. Fascinated by the strong personality of Lessona, he started a natural sciences course at the local university and graduated in 1878. After having held several positions as assistant he became professor in 1880 and attained a permanent tenure in Cagliari University. A little later he went back to Turin where he was assigned the chair of comparative anatomy, that he held till 1915. Flies are insects of the order Diptera, the name being derived from the Greek δι- ''di-'' "two", and πτερόν ''pteron'' "wing". Insects of this order use only a single pair of wings to fly, the hindwings having evolved into advanced mechanosensory organs known as halteres, which act as high-speed sensors of rotational movement and allow dipterans to perform advanced aerobatics.
