Vito Price
Vito Price (born Vito Pizzo in 1929) is an American jazz saxophonist. He is best known for his album ''Swingin' the Loop'' recorded in January 1959, although on-line discographer Tom Lord says in The Jazz Discography that it was recorded in Chicago on 20 January 1958. His second leadership album was '''S Wonderful'' released in 2003. Biography Price was born in 1929 in New York. At the age of 14 he began playing the alto and tenor saxophones. Price played with New York jazz groups while at high school. After leaving high school he played with the bands of Bob Chester, Art Mooney, Tony Pastor, and Chubby Jackson. In 1951, Price joined the marines, spending two years in the Marine Corps Band. After that, he spent two years studying at the Manhattan Music School. Elliot Lawrence
Elliott Lawrence Broza (February 14, 1925 – July 2, 2021), known professionally as Elliott Lawrence, was an American jazz pianist and bandleader. Son of the broadcaster Stan Lee Broza, Lawrence led his first dance band at age 20, but he played swing at the time its heyday was coming to a close. He recorded copiously as a bandleader for Columbia, Decca, King, Fantasy, Vik, and SESAC between 1946 and 1960. Lawrence was music director for the Tony awards show. Life and career Elliot Lawrence was born Elliot Lawrence Broza on February 14, 1925, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. His parents, Stan Lee Broza and Esther Broza, were radio and television pioneers. Lou Levy (pianist)
Louis A. "Lou" Levy (March 5, 1928 – January 23, 2001) was an American jazz pianist. Biography Levy was born to Jewish parents in Chicago, Illinois, United States, and start to play the piano aged twelve. His chief influences were Art Tatum and Bud Powell. A professional at age nineteen, Levy played with Georgie Auld (1947 and later), Sarah Vaughan, Chubby Jackson (1947–1948), Boyd Raeburn, Woody Herman's Second Herd (1948–1950), Tommy Dorsey (1950) and Flip Phillips. Levy left music for a few years in the early 1950s and then returned to gain a strong reputation as an accompanist to singers, working with Peggy Lee (1955–1973), Ella Fitzgerald (1957–1962), June Christy, Anita O'Day and Pinky Winters. Tenor Saxophone
The tenor saxophone is a medium-sized member of the saxophone family, a group of instruments invented by Adolphe Sax in the 1840s. The tenor and the alto are the two most commonly used saxophones. The tenor is pitched in the key of B (while the alto is pitched in the key of E), and written as a transposing instrument in the treble clef, sounding an octave and a major second lower than the written pitch. Modern tenor saxophones which have a high F key have a range from A2 to E5 (concert) and are therefore pitched one octave below the soprano saxophone. People who play the tenor saxophone are known as "tenor saxophonists", "tenor sax players", or "saxophonists". First recordings The first recording was on November 19, 1946 for Musicraft by Sarah Vaughan with the Teddy Wilson Quartet: Wilson on piano, Charlie Ventura on tenor saxophone, Remo Palmieri on guitar, and Billy Taylor on double bass. Argo Records was a record label in Chicago that was established in 1955 as a division of Chess Records. Originally the label was called Marterry, but bandleader Ralph Marterie objected, and within a couple of months the imprint was renamed Argo.Cohodas, Nadine (2000). Tommy Shepard
Thomas M. Shepard (March 31, 1923 – February 23, 1993) was an American trombonist who worked extensively in both Chicago and Hollywood as a regular recording artist for the top recording, television, and film studios. He had a trombone sound that was often compared to Tommy Dorsey. Shepard is also known as a photographer, who took behind-the-scenes photographs of many of the top entertainers of the 1960s. Biography Tommy Shepard began playing trombone in his junior year in high school. The next year he won a national solo contest and by the time he was 19 he was on the road with the Ben Bernie Orchestra. Pat Rizzo
Pat Rizzo (November 30, 1941 – April 15, 2021) was an American saxophonist and flautist, best known for his work with funk band Sly and the Family Stone. Career Rizzo started performing in the sixties with The Cuff Links. He is best known for his work as saxophonist and flautist with funk band Sly and the Family Stone. He was intended as a replacement for founding member Jerry Martini, who got into trouble with Sly Stone and his accountants for inquiring about money rightfully due to him, but both Martini and Rizzo remained in the band and became good friends. He later replaced Charles Miller in War. During this period he also performed with Tito Puente and Frank Sinatra. Rizzo appeared on Ry Cooder's 1976 album ''Chicken Skin Music'', 1977 live album '' Show Time'' and his 1978 album ''Jazz'' and he accompanied Cooder on his 1977 tour of Europe.
