Its county seat is Waseca, Minnesota, Waseca. History In 1849, the newly organized Minnesota Territory legislature authorized nine counties across the territory. One of those, Dakota County, Minnesota, Dakota, was partially subdivided in 1853 to create Blue Earth County, Minnesota, Blue Earth, Le Sueur County, Minnesota, Le Sueur, and Rice County, Minnesota, Rice counties. Area codes 507 and 924 are telephone area codes in the North American Numbering Plan for the southern fifth of Minnesota, including cities such as Rochester, Mankato, Worthington, Fairmont, Albert Lea, Northfield, and Austin. The original area code, 507, was the third area code created for use in the state in 1954, following the original 218 and 612. It was created from the southwestern portion of 218 and the southern portion of 612. It was overlaid with area code 924 in 2024. It is the first area code overlay complex in Minnesota. The Geographic Names Information System (GNIS) is a database of name and location information about more than two million physical and cultural features, encompassing the United States and its territories; the Compact of Free Association, associated states of the Marshall Islands, Federated States of Micronesia, and Palau; and Antarctica.
