Virxe Da Barca Sanctuary
The Virxe da Barca sanctuary is a church located in MuxÃa, Spain. It was destroyed by a fire that was started by lightning on 25 December 2013. History The sanctuary was originally a pre-Christian Celtic shrine and sacred spot. This part of Spain was resistant to conversion to Christianity, and was only converted in the 12th century. The Christians built a hermitage on this location at first, and later the present church in the 17th century. A Ferida
A Ferida (''English: The Wound'') is a sculpture located in the municipality of MuxÃa, A Coruña, Spain. Made by sculptor, , it faces the Atlantic Ocean, outside the entrance of the Virxe da Barca sanctuary. The granite sculpture stands more than in height and weighs 400 tons. The granite came from O Porriño, and it is the largest sculpture in Galicia and Spain. Prestige Oil Spill
The ''Prestige'' oil spill occurred off the coast of Galicia, Spain in November 2002, caused by the sinking of the 26-year-old, structurally deficient oil tanker , carrying 77,000 tonnes of heavy fuel oil. During a storm, it burst a tank on 13 November, and French, Spanish, and Portuguese governments refused to allow the ship to dock. The vessel subsequently sank on 19 November, about from the coast of Galicia. It is estimated that it spilled 60,000 tonnes or a volume of of heavy fuel oil. The oil spill polluted 2300 kilometers of coastline and more than one thousand beaches on the Spanish, French and Portuguese coast, as well as causing great harm to the local fishing industry. The spill is the largest environmental disaster in the history of both Spain and Portugal. MuxÃa
MuxÃa () is a coastal town and municipality in the province of A Coruña in the autonomous community of Galicia in northwestern Spain. It belongs to the comarca of Fisterra. It is one of the final destinations for pilgrims on the Way of St. James after visiting the shrine of the apostle Saint James the Great in Santiago de Compostela. MuxÃa is known for its beaches. It has an active fishing industry. MuxÃa is part of the ' Costa da Morte' or 'Costa de la Muerte' (i.e., the "Coast of Death"). The Costa Da Morte was given this name because of the large number of shipwrecks along its rocky shore. The Costa Da Morte is one of the three regions of the Costa del Marisco, or "The Seafood Coast." A hermit, also known as an eremite (adjectival form: hermitic or eremitic) or solitary, is a person who lives in seclusion. Eremitism plays a role in a variety of religions.
