The state highway runs from U.S. Route 1 in Virginia, U.S. Route 1 (US 1) in Woodbridge, Virginia, Woodbridge north to the Chain Bridge (Potomac River), Chain Bridge across the Potomac River into Washington, D.C., Washington from Arlington, Virginia, Arlington. It goes by four local names. From its southern terminus to the Occoquan River Bridge, it is known as Gordon Boulevard.
