Virgilio Lobregat
Virgilio Lobregat (23 May 1901 – 30 August 1944) was a Filipino sportsman best known as a football player. He competed for the Philippines national football team at the Far Eastern Games. During World War II, he fought the Japanese as a guerrilla under Juan Miguel Elizalde, and was beheaded in August 1944 along with Elizalde and 70 other prisoners at the Manila North Cemetery. Early life and education Lobregat was born in Spain on 23 May 1901 and moved with his family to the Philippine Islands in 1904. Lobregat first attended the La Salle Nozaleda in second grade. He graduated from La Salle high school in 1918. Sporting career Football Lobregat is often regarded as the best Filipino player in the pre-World War II period after Paulino Alcántara. Paulino Alcántara
Paulino Alcántara Riestrá (7 October 1896 – 13 February 1964) was a football player and manager who played as a forward. Born in the Philippines, he spent most of his playing career at Barcelona, and also represented Catalonia, the Philippines and Spain internationally. Alcántara made his debut for Barcelona at the age of 15, and remains the youngest player to play or score for the club. He scored 395 goals in 399 official and friendly matches, a club record that stood for 87 years. After retiring as a player in 1927 at the age of 31, he became a doctor. Alcántara served as a club director between 1931 and 1934. In 1951, Alcántara became a coach and managed Spain for three games. Benigno "Ninoy" Simeon Aquino Jr., (; November 27, 1932 – August 21, 1983) was a Filipino politician who served as a senator of the Philippines (1967–1972) and governor of the province of Tarlac. Aquino was the husband of Corazon Aquino, who became the 11th president of the Philippines after his assassination, and father of Benigno Aquino III, who became the 15th president of the Philippines. Aquino, together with Gerardo Roxas and Jovito Salonga, helped form the leadership of the opposition towards then President Ferdinand Marcos. He was the aggressive leader who together with the intellectual leader Sen. Jose W. Diokno led the overall opposition. The Philippine Amateur Athletic Federation (PAAF) was the governing body of sports in the Philippines and the predecessor of the Philippine Olympic Committee. History The Philippine Amateur Athletic Federation was organized in a permanent basis in 1911 as a result of the gaining of foothold of athletics in the Philippine Islands which was caused by American influence since 1899. Jacinto "Jumping Jack" Ciria Cruz (August 16, 1910 – December 25, 1944) was a Filipino basketball player and coach. Ciria Cruz played for the UST Growling Tigers, University of Santo Tomas men's basketball team and also represented the Philippines at the 1936 Summer Olympics as a member of the country's national basketball team.
