Violin Sonata No. 1 (Brahms)
The Violin Sonata No. 1 in G major, Op. 78, "''Regensonate''", for violin and piano was composed by Johannes Brahms during the summers of 1878 and 1879 in Pörtschach am Wörthersee. It was first performed on 8 November 1879 in Bonn, by the husband and wife Robert Heckmann (violin) and Marie Heckmann-Hertig (piano). Structure Each of the three movements of this sonata shares common motivic ideas or thematic materials from the principal motif of Brahms's two songs "''Regenlied''" and "''Nachklang''", Op. 59, and this is why this sonata is also called the "Rain Sonata" (''Regensonate''). The first movement, ''Vivace ma non troppo'' is written in sonata form in G major; the second movement, ''Adagio'' – ''Più andante'' – ''Adagio'', is an expanded ternary form in E major, and the third movement, ''Allegro molto moderato'' is a rondo in G minor with coda in G major. Johannes Brahms (; 7 May 1833 – 3 April 1897) was a German composer, pianist, and conductor of the mid- Romantic period. Born in Hamburg into a Lutheran family, he spent much of his professional life in Vienna. He is sometimes grouped with Johann Sebastian Bach and Ludwig van Beethoven as one of the "Three Bs" of music, a comment originally made by the nineteenth-century conductor Hans von Bülow. The rondo is an instrumental musical form introduced in the Classical period. Etymology The English word ''rondo'' comes from the Italian form of the French ''rondeau'', which means "a little round". Despite the common etymological root, rondo and rondeau as musical forms are essentially different. Rondeau is a ''vocal'' musical form that was originally developed as monophonic music (in the 13th century) and then as polyphonic music (in the 14th century). Laszlo Varga (cellist)
Laszlo Varga (December 13, 1924 – December 11, 2014) was a Hungarian-born American cellist who had a worldwide status as a soloist, recording artist, and authoritative cello teacher. Biography As a Jew, Varga lost his position at the Budapest Symphony during WW II and was later interned by Hungarian authorities in a Nazi labor camp. For 11 years Varga held the position as principal cellist of the New York Philharmonic under the baton of the orchestra's music directors Dimitri Mitropoulos and Leonard Bernstein, and many guest conductors including Fritz Reiner and Guido Cantelli. He performed as soloist with orchestras in countries such as Australia, Japan, USA, the former Soviet Union, and throughout Europe. Paul Klengel
Paul Klengel (13 May 1854 – 24 April 1935) was a German violinist, violist, pianist, conductor, composer, editor and arranger. He was the brother of cellist Julius Klengel. Biography Klengel was born and died in Leipzig, where he studied at the Leipzig Conservatory of Music and the University of Leipzig receiving his doctorate in 1886 with the dissertation ''Zur Ästhetik der Tonkunst'' (The Aesthetic of Music). From 1881 to 1886 he was choral conductor for the Euterpe Music Society in Leipzig and from 1888 to 1891 he worked at the Hofkapelle Stuttgart. Cyclic form is a technique of musical construction, involving multiple sections or movements, in which a theme, melody, or thematic material occurs in more than one movement as a unifying device.
