Vilppula
Vilppula was a former municipality of Finland. Neighbouring Mänttä was merged into it on 1 January 2009 to form the municipality of Mänttä-Vilppula. The municipality was unilingually Finnish. It was located in the province of Western Finland and was part of the Pirkanmaa region. The municipality had a population of 5,457 in 2005 and covered an area of 571.26 km² of which 99.90 km² was water. The population density was 10.5 inhabitants per km². The work force mainly consisted of industry and service, these accounting for 50 and 39 percent of total workforce. Population was estimated to be at a slight decline. The Kolho village in Vilppula is located to the north. Another village, Pohjaslahti, is located northwest from the Vilppula centre. These continue to exist as villages of the new Mänttä-Vilppula municipality. Mänttä-Vilppula ( sv, Mänttä-Vilppula, also ) is a town and municipality of Finland. The municipalities of Mänttä and Vilppula were consolidated into a single municipality on January 1, 2009. It is located in the Pirkanmaa region. The town has a population of () and covers an area of of which is water. The municipality is unilingually Finnish. Neighbouring municipalities are Keuruu, Juupajoki, Jämsä, Ruovesi and Virrat. The city of Tampere is located southwest of the center of Mänttä-Vilppula. Battle Of Vilppula
Battle of Vilppula was a Finnish Civil War battle fought in Vilppula and Ruovesi, Finland in 31 January – 18 March 1918 between the Whites and the Reds. Due to its location by the Tampere–Haapamäki railway, Vilppula was a gateway to the White controlled Central Finland. The Reds were aiming to Haapamäki, 25 kilometres north of Vilppula, which was a vital junction of the east–west railways connecting the regions of Ostrobothnia, Häme and Karelia. From Haapamäki, the Reds would be able to reach the White stronghold in Southern Ostrobothnia, including their capital Vaasa. However, the attack along the railway was stopped at the beginning of February. The Reds now turned their attention to the village of Väärinmaja in order to reach Vilppula from southwest by the road connecting Ruovesi and Vilppula. Pohjaslahti
Pohjaslahti is a village and former municipality of Finland at the time of its existence in the Häme Province, now in the Pirkanmaa region. It was divided between Vilppula and Virrat in 1973. Pohjaslahti was the last rural municipality to be created in Finland, which happened in 1941. It bordered Vilppula, Ruovesi, Virrat and Keuruu. It also bordered Pihlajavesi until 1969, when it was merged into Keuruu. History Pohjaslahti has existed at least since 1564, when it was mentioned as ''Pohialaxi''. A farm named Pohjaslahti was established earlier in the 16th century. At the time, it was a part of Ruovesi, which was separated from Pirkkala in 1565. Ruovesi was mainly settled by Tavastians and the dialects of Ruovesi and Pohjaslahti are Tavastian dialects. Some settlers in the area were Savonians, whose influence can still be seen in the local dialect, e.g. the usage of the extra ''loi''-syllable in plural nouns (for example ''ristejä'' may be pronounced as ''ristilöitä''). ... Pirkanmaa
Pirkanmaa (; sv, Birkaland; la, Birkaria, link=no), also known as ''Tampere Region'' in government documents, is a region of Finland. It borders the regions of Satakunta, South Ostrobothnia, Central Finland, Päijät-Häme, Kanta-Häme and Southwest Finland. Most of the water area in the Kokemäki River watershed is located in the Pirkanmaa region, although Lake Vanajavesi is partly in the Kanta-Häme region. The region got its name from Pirkkala, which in the Middle Ages comprised most of present-day Pirkanmaa. Tampere is the regional center and capital of Pirkanmaa, and at the same time the largest city in the region. The total population of Pirkanmaa was 529,100 on 30 June 2022, which makes it the second largest among Finland's regions after Uusimaa. Between 1634 and 2009, Finland was administered as several provinces ( fi, Suomen läänit, sv, Finlands län). Finland had always been a unitary state: the provincial authorities were part of the central government's executive branch and apart from Åland, the provinces had little autonomy. There were never any elected provincial parliaments in continental Finland. The system was initially created in 1634. Its makeup was changed drastically on 1 September 1997, when the number of the provinces was reduced from twelve to six. This effectively made them purely administrative units, as linguistic and cultural boundaries no longer followed the borders of the provinces.
