Villa Massei
Villa Massei is a 16th-century hunting lodge and 60 acres estate in Massa Macinaia, near the ancient walled city of Lucca, Italy, known for its fine gardens, which are visited by hundreds of garden lovers from all over the world annually. The house was built by the Counts Sinibaldi in about 1500, and was inherited by the Marchesi Massei in the 18th century, nephews of the Sinibaldi. In the 1950s the property was home to Lionel Fielden, founder of All India Radio and author of ''The Natural Bent''. Lucca ( , ) is a city and ''comune'' in Tuscany, Central Italy, on the Serchio River, in a fertile plain near the Ligurian Sea. Paul Gervais is an American visual artist and writer, who has also published a personal memoir. His novel, ''Extraordinary People'', was nominated for the PEN/ Faulkner Award for Fiction in 1992. Early life and studies George Paul Gervais Jr. was born in America in 1946 at Waterville, Maine, to George Paul and Doris Boyd Gervais. His father was born George Paul Beede, in Lowell, Massachusetts, 1908, but adopted the name of his step-father, Gervais, when he was 26 years old. (He was directly descended in the paternal line from Elie de Bédée des Aulnais, born in Britain on the island of Jersey, of a French Protestant family of Anger and Brittany, who had fled France after the repeal of the Edict of Nantes. Penelope Hobhouse MBE (born 20 November 1929), née Chichester-Clark, is a British garden writer, designer, lecturer and television presenter. Early life Born into an Anglo-Irish family in Moyola Park, Castledawson, she is the daughter of James Lenox-Conyngham Chichester-Clark and Marion Caroline Dehra Chichester (1904-1976). Pia Pera (12 March 1956 – 26 July 2016) was an Italian novelist, essayist, and translator. Born in Lucca, the daughter of the jurist Giuseppe, a noted translator of Pushkin into Italian Pera started her own writing career in 1992, with the short stories collection ''La bellezza dell'asino'' ("''The Beauty of the Donkey''"). She got international notoriety with her 1995 novel ''Lo's Diary'' ( it, Diario di Lo), a retelling of Vladimir Nabokov's novel ''Lolita'' from the point of view of the female title character. In later years she specialized in novels connected to her passion for gardening. Pera was also a translator of Russian novels and an essayist.
