Vilhelm Pettersson
Per Johan Vilhelm Pettersson (1814-1854), was a Swedish ballet dancer. He was an elite member of first the Royal Swedish Ballet during the mid 19th-century, and a deputy ballet master. Vilhelm Pettersson was reportedly from a poor background as the son of laborers. During his childhood, he was once asked to perform a simple extra role in a ballet performance, and liked it so much that he wished to become a dancer. He became a student of the Royal Swedish Ballet in 1826, premier student in 1834, second-dancer in 1835, and was a premier- and grotesque dancer in 1838-54. During the 1830s, he was referred to as one of the male stars of the ballet alongside Anders Selinder, Per Christian Johansson and Carl Wilhelm Silfverberg. He was deputy Ballet Master of the Royal Ballet from 1846-1851. Royal Swedish Ballet
The Royal Swedish Ballet is one of the oldest ballet companies in Europe. Based in Stockholm, Sweden, King Gustav III founded the ballet in 1773 as a part of his national cultural project in response to the French and Italian dominance in this field; he also founded the Royal Swedish Opera and the Royal Dramatic Theatre. All of these were initially located in the old theatre of Bollhuset. The troupe was founded with the opening of the Royal Swedish Opera, which has served as its home since that time. Anders Selinder
Anders Selinder (4 November 1806, Stockholm – 6 November 1874, Stockholm), was a Swedish ballet dancer, choreographer and director. He was Ballet master of the Royal Swedish Ballet in 1833–1856. Life Anders Selinder was the son of the jeweler A. Selinder in Stockholm. Selinder premier dancer at the Royal ballet in the Royal Swedish Opera in Stockholm in 1829-46. In 1833, he was appointed ballet master at the age of twenty seven. He succeeded Per Erik Wallqvist, and worked closely to Sophie Daguin, who had previously shared the position of ballet master with Wallqvist and was principal of the Opera's ballet school. Per Christian Johansson
Pehr Christian Johansson (1 June 1817 – 12 December 1903) was a teacher, choreographer and balletmaster for the Russian Imperial Ballet. He was engaged at the Royal Swedish Ballet in 1829-41, and at the Imperial Russian Ballet in 1841-66. Born in Stockholm, Sweden, he moved to Russia as a dancer and stayed on as one of the most important teachers in Russian history. He is remembered in Russia as exemplifying the artistic beauty of the male dancer. He began teaching in 1860 and by 1869, had become the leading ballet instructor at the Imperial Ballet School. He stayed there until his death in 1903. Johansson studied under Bournonville and partnered the great ballerina Marie Taglioni. Grotesque Dance
Grotesque dance (French: ''danse grotesque''; Italian: ''ballo grottesco'' or ''danza grottesca'') is a category of theatrical dance that became more clearly differentiated in the 18th century and was incorporated into ballet, although it had its roots in earlier centuries. As opposed to the ''danse noble'' or "noble dance" performed in royal courts which emphasized beauty of movement and noble themes, grotesque dances were comic or lighthearted and created for buffoons and ''commedia dell'arte'' characters to amuse and entertain spectators or patrons. In 16th and 17th centuries grotesque dances were often presented as an anti-masque, performed between the acts of more serious courtly entertainments. Edvard Stjernström
Carl Edvard Stjernström (11 October 1816 – 10 February 1877) was a Swedish stage actor and theater director. In 1833, he was accepted as a student at the Royal Dramatic Theatre. From 1842 to 1850, he was employed at Nya Teatern. He was the director of the Stjernström theater Company from 1850 to 1854, director of the Mindre Teatern in Stockholm from 1854 to 1863, and the founder and manager of the Nya Teatern from 1875 to 1877. He played a significant role in 19th-century theatre in both Sweden, where his theater company was regarded to be one of the most prestigious, as well as in Finland, where his theater company was given theatre monopoly to perform from 1850 to 1853. Carolina Friebel
Carolina Desideria Granberg also known as Carolina Friebel (Stockholm, 31 March 1818 - 2 October 1884), was a Swedish ballerina. She was considered as one of the leading members of the Royal Swedish Ballet. She became a student of Sophie Daguin at the Royal Swedish Ballet in 1834, and was a premier dancer (ballerina) from 1838 to 1855 and at that point regarded as a leading member of the Swedish ballet. Kalmar
Kalmar (, , ) is a city in the southeast of Sweden, situated by the Baltic Sea. It had 36,392 inhabitants in 2010 and is the seat of Kalmar Municipality. A sylph (also called sylphid) is an air spirit stemming from the 16th-century works of Paracelsus, who describes sylphs as (invisible) beings of the air, his elementals of air. A significant number of subsequent literary and occult works have been inspired by Paracelsus's concept: Robert Alfred Vaughan noted that "the wild but poetical fantasies" of Paracelsus had probably exercised a larger influence over his age and the subsequent one than is generally supposed, particularly on the Rosicrucians, but that through the 18th century they had become reduced to "machinery for the playwright" and "opera figurantes with wings of gauze and spangles". Numismatics is the study or collection of currency, including coins, tokens, paper money, medals and related objects.
