Viersen (; li, Veeëse) is the capital of the district of Viersen, in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. Geography Viersen is situated approximately 8 km north-west of Mönchengladbach, 15 km south-west of Krefeld and 20 km east of Venlo (Netherlands). Division of the town The city of Viersen is made up of three (formerly independent) cities: Süchteln, Dülken and Viersen, which combined in 1970, and one former village, Boisheim, which combined with Viersen in 1968. Viersen Bismarck Tower
The Bismarck Tower located in Viersen (North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany) was erected in honour of the chancellor Otto von Bismarck and has since become an icon of the city of Viersen. Geographical situation The Bismarck-Tower is situated in hilly woodland to the north west of Viersen called "Hoher Busch" namely on a hilltop called "Wilhelmshöhe", with a height of 84.94 metres above sea level the highest point of Viersen. At the time of its erection the view from the top reached far out over the low-lying areas along the river Niers. Today this view is blocked by tall trees. Städtische Galerie Im Park Viersen
Städtische Galerie im Park Viersen is the municipal art gallery of Viersen in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. It has a collection of graphic reproductions. The gallery is located in an old town house, surrounded by a park with huge old trees housing the Viersen sculpture collection. The building The building was constructed in 1869 as representative neo-renaissance townhouse and became the property of the firm Kaisers Kaffeegeschäft in 1899, who had its headquarters in Viersen. Since 1973 this fine villa belongs to the city of Viersen. In 1976 it became listed as important example of the architecture of its time, in 1980 it was moderately remodeled for use as an art gallery, which opened up in 1981 as ''Städtische Galerie im Park'' for exhibitions as well as other cultural events. Viersen station is a station in the city of Viersen in the west of the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia. History The first Viersen station was opened on 5 October 1849 by the Aachen-Düsseldorf-Ruhrort Railway Company (german: Königliche Direction der Aachen-Düsseldorf-Ruhrorter Eisenbahn) as part of its Ruhrort–Gladbach line near Alte Bruchstraße. On 4 March 1850, the company was made subordinate to the '' Royal Division of the Aachen-Dusseldorf-Ruhrort Railway'' (german: Königliche Direction der Aachen-Düsseldorf-Ruhrorter Eisenbahn) based in Aachen by a royal decree. In 1862 the Bergisch-Märkische Railway Company (''Bergisch-Märkische Eisenbahn-Gesellschaft'', BME) took over company in order to extend its network on to the western bank of the Rhine. The Festhalle Viersen (Festival Hall Viersen) is a performance space in Viersen, a town located in the Lower Rhine region of Germany. It is well known for its theater and concert programme and is also the annual venue of the UMB World Three-cushion Championship of national teams as well as of the annual international Jazz Festival. History The Festhalle was completed in 1913 to plans by the municipal architect Eugen Frielingsdorf. The industrialist Josef Kaiser, who had the headquarters of his locally founded company Kaiser's Kaffeegeschäft in Viersen, initiated the construction of the building by donating 130.000 Marks (ℳ) on the occasion of his appointment to royal Kommerzienrat (Councillor of Commerce). The Viersen Sculpture Collection belongs to the major sculpture parks in Germany and is located in the center of Viersen (North Rhine-Westphalia). History The Viersen Sculpture Collection was built up during the last 25 years by the donation of the American businessman and former Viersen citizen William Pohl as well as by other donations and funds from the “Stiftung Kunst und Kultur” of North Rhine-Westfalia. So the park surrounding the City Art Gallery “Galerie im Park” developed into a fine sculpture collection to which contributed well renowned artists with remarkable works. Dülken
Dülken is a town located in the North Rhine-Westphalia state of Germany. It has a population of about 20,000. It is a borough of the municipality of Viersen. It received its town charter in 1364 thus being the oldest part of the municipality of Viersen. It lies in the administrative region of Düsseldorf. The river Nette having its source underground in the middle of the town rises near the town. The town motto is, "Gloria tibi Duelken", or "Glory to you, Duelken". Viersen () is a Kreis (district) in the west of North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. Neighboring districts are Cleves, Wesel, district-free Krefeld, Neuss, district-free Mönchengladbach, Heinsberg and the Dutch province of Limburg. History In 1816, the new Prussian government created the district of ''Kempen''. Originally belonging to the Regierungsbezirk Kleve which was dissolved in 1822, Kempen has since then belonged to Düsseldorf. Süchteln
Süchteln is a borough (''Stadtbezirk'') of Viersen, a town which is the centre of the '' Kreis'' of Viersen in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. Süchteln was formerly an independent town; the Catholic parish church of St Clement is at its centre. The church was built in 1481 and has a well preserved tower 73 metres tall. History The first mention of the settlement of Süchteln was in 1116, in the books of the Abbey of St. Pantaleon in Cologne. It was granted the right to hold a market in 1423, when it belonged to the Duchy of Jülich. It has been chartered as a town since 1405. The Viersen Jazz Festival is a music festival held every autumn in Viersen, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. It was established in 1969 as ''1. Internationales Niederrheinisches Jazz Festival''. History After the first year it took almost 18 years till the festival continued in 1987 with double bassist Ali Haurand as artistic director. The festival is held on the fourth weekend in September in the city hall of Viersen and enjoyed nationwide a good reputation. The Dülkener Schöppenmarkt (i. e. „Shovel Fair“) in Dülken is one of the largest and oldest country-fairs or Krammärkte in Western Germany.
