Victorian Individual Speedway Championship
The Victorian Individual Speedway Championship is a Motorcycle speedway championship held annually in Australia's southernmost mainland state of Victoria to determine the State champion. The event is organised by the Motorcycling Victoria and is sanctioned by Motorcycling Australia (MA). Mildura's Phil Crump, father of three time World Champion Jason Crump, holds the record for the most wins having won 13 Victorian Championships between 1972 and 1988. Seven international riders have won the Victorian Championship. Motorcycle Speedway
Motorcycle speedway, usually referred to simply as speedway, is a motorcycle sport involving four and sometimes up to six riders competing over four anti-clockwise laps of an oval circuit. The motorcycles are specialist machines that use only one gear and have no brakes. Racing takes place on a flat oval track usually consisting of dirt, loosely packed shale, or crushed rock (mostly used in Australia and New Zealand). Competitors use this surface to slide their machines sideways, powersliding or broadsiding into the bends. On the straight sections of the track, the motorcycles reach speeds of up to . The Motordrome, also known as the Olympic Park Speedway, the Melbourne Speedway or the Victorian Speedway, was a former speedway and Australian rules football ground located approximately on the site of the present day Melbourne Rectangular Stadium in Olympic Park in Melbourne, Victoria. The ground was primarily a speedway track, but also hosted football matches. History Melbourne Carnivals Pty. Ltd, a company established in 1923 by Jack Campbell and Jim DuFrocq, developed and leased a large site known as the Amateur Sports Ground from the Crown with the help of local entrepreneur John Wren. Ernie Evans
Ernest "Ernie" Evans (6 March 1892 – 28 February 1965) was a member of the Queensland Legislative Assembly. Biography Evans was born in Killarney, Queensland, the son of Joseph Evans and his wife Harriet (née Murphy). He was educated at Spring Creek Killarney State Schools and after finishing his education worked as a shearer and timber cutter. In 1920 he went partners in a sugar cane farm at Little Mulgrave. Having trouble transporting the cane, he organised the local farmers into forming a company to build a train line to the Mulgrave sugar mill. In 1929 he moved to the Mackay district and bought another cane farm and became heavily associated with the Australian Sugar Producers Association.
