Victoria (Dance Exponents Song)
"Victoria" is a song by New Zealand rock band The Exponents from their 1982 album '' Prayers Be Answered'' and their debut single. Released in June 1982 as the band's debut single, it reached Number 6 on the New Zealand singles chart. The song was selected by a panel of New Zealand songwriters to have been the #8 top 100 New Zealand songs of all time. Background "Victoria" was inspired by Luck's landlady in Christchurch, with the name ''Victoria'' used as a pseudonym whilst her real name was Vicky. She successfully ran an escort agency but lived with an abusive man: Luck questioned her relationship with the line "What do you see in him?". The band moved to Auckland before the release of the song. After the single became a success, Luck visited 'Victoria' in Christchurch and was happy to find that she not only loved the song but had also split from her abusive boyfriend. The Exponents, formerly The Dance Exponents, was a New Zealand rock group led by vocalist and songwriter Jordan Luck. Their major hits were "Victoria" " Why Does Love Do This To Me" and "Who Loves Who The Most". Searching for a drummer in Christchurch, the trio met David Gent (bass) and Michael "Harry" Harallambi (drums) from punk band Channel 4. Cowan moved from bass to keyboards and guitar and the five piece became the Dance Exponents. Their first gig was at the Hillsborough Tavern on Luck's 20th birthday and Cowan's 22nd – 15 October 1981. ''Prayers Be Answered'' is the second album release and the first studio album by the New Zealand band The Dance Exponents, released in December 1983. The album peaked at #4 and spent 45 weeks on the New Zealand Album charts. The album won the Best Album award at the 1984 New Zealand Music Awards. In May 2013, Universal Music re-released the album digitally in New Zealand in remastered standard and deluxe editions. The deluxe edition has twelve additional tracks of singles, B-sides, rarities and demos. Jordan Luck
Jordan William Hunter Luck (born 15 October 1961) is the former lead singer and songwriter of the New Zealand rock band The Exponents. He was born in Vanderhoof in the province of British Columbia, Canada. His family moved to Tokarahi (near Oamaru) and later moved to Geraldine where he grew up. He attended University of Canterbury and College House. He is now in a band called The Jordan Luck Band. At the 2007 APRA Silver Scroll Awards on 18 September, Luck was named as the first inductee to the New Zealand Music Hall of Fame. He was appointed a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit for services to music in the 2012 Queen's Birthday and Diamond Jubilee Honours. The APRA Top 100 New Zealand Songs of All Time is a selection of New Zealand songs as voted in 2001 by members of the Australasian Performing Right Association. The top 30 of this selection was used to create the ''Nature's Best'' CD and the rest of the list for follow up compilations. A similar list was made in Australia of the top 30 Australian songs. ''Amplifier'' is the third studio album by the New Zealand band Dance Exponents (later known as The Exponents), released in November 1986. The album peaked at #18 and spent four weeks on the New Zealand Album Chart. The CD version was released in 1992 with an alternative cover and two additional tracks but has since been deleted. In May 2013, Universal Music re-released the album digitally for the first time in New Zealand in a remastered extended edition. The extended edition has the original LP cover and running order and adds three additional tracks, two from the CD release and one additional B-side. It also restores "Worldwide Wireless" to its full length after it was edited for the CD release.
