Victor Desguin
Victor Desguin (; 30 January 1838 – 8 July 1919) was a Belgian liberal politician. He was a popular alderman of the city of Antwerp in charge of education and municipal schools at the end of the 19th century. He was twice acting mayor of Antwerp, but was never appointed mayor of the city. Desguin was born on 30 January 1838. He became alderman of the city of Antwerp in 1892, responsible for education and schooling. He built libraries and schools. He became acting mayor in 1906, when mayor Jan Van Rijswijck withdrew from office due to illness. Desguin was a member of the liberal party, and because of this, the Catholic government did not want him appointed as mayor. Instead Peter Hertogs became mayor. When Peter Hertogs died in office in 1908, Desguin became acting mayor again, and for the second time somebody else became mayor instead of him. Jan De Vos was appointed mayor. Mariembourg
Mariembourg ( wa, Mariyambour) is a town in the municipality of Couvin in the Province of Namur, Belgium. The town is named after Mary of Hungary, governor of what was then the Habsburg Netherlands, who ordered the construction of a fortress town there in 1542. The fortifications were demolished in 1853, but the former arsenal remains. By 1554, it was conquered by French troops, and has throughout the centuries frequently switched hands. The town has a church (built in 1542), a Neo-Gothic former town hall and is served by a railway station. Alderman
An alderman is a member of a Municipal government, municipal assembly or council in many Jurisdiction, jurisdictions founded upon English law. The term may be titular, denoting a high-ranking member of a borough or county council, a council member chosen by the elected members themselves rather than by Direct election, popular vote, or a council member elected by voters. Jan Van Rijswijck
Jan Van Rijswijck (14 February 1853 – 23 September 1906) was a Belgian lawyer, liberal politician and journalist. Education He started his education at the boarding school of Melle and continued his education at the Catholic University of Leuven and finally at the Universite Libre de Bruxelles, where he graduated as a Doctor in Law on 20 April 1876. Career He established himself as a lawyer in Antwerp. On 25 October 1881, he became a member of the municipal Council of Antwerp and on 28 October 1889, he was appointed alderman of education. In 1892, he succeeded Leopold De Wael as mayor of Antwerp. From 1892 up to 1906, he was mayor of Antwerp, and from 1900 up to 1906, a Member of Parliament. Jan De Vos (politician)
Jan Baptist De Vos (7 February 1844 – 30 March 1923) was mayor (''burgomaster'') of Antwerp in Belgium from 15 March 1909 until 21 July 1921. He stayed on as mayor after the capture of Antwerp by German forces during World War I, and remained in office after the end of German occupation. Career Jan De Vos was born in Dendermonde. He became a successful trader and entered local politics when he was elected in the city council as councillor on 19 October 1890. King Leopold II appointed him mayor of Antwerp on 22 February 1909, much against the wishes of the Liberal Party, of which Jan De Vos was also member, who would have preferred the alderman (''schepen'') Victor Desguin.
