Verner Main
Verner Wright Main (December 16, 1885 – July 6, 1965) was a politician from the U.S. state of Michigan. Main was born in Ashley, Ohio, where he attended the public schools. He graduated from Marion High School in Marion, Ohio. He also graduated from Hillsdale College of Michigan in 1907, and from the law department of the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor in 1914. He served as principal of the high schools at Hudson, Michigan in 1908 and 1909 and at Niles from 1909 to 1912. He was admitted to the bar in 1914 and commenced the practice of law in Battle Creek. During the First World War, Main volunteered for military service with the Field Artillery and was in training at the officers' training camp at Louisville, Kentucky when the armistice was signed. Karl Adolph Verner (; 7 March 1846 – 5 November 1896) was a Danish linguist. He is remembered today for Verner's law, which he published in 1876. Biography Verner's interest in languages was stimulated by reading about the work of Rasmus Christian Rask. He began his university studies in 1864 in Oriental, Germanic, and Slavic languages, and then he served in the army before resuming his studies. He traveled to Russia in December 1871, spending nearly a year learning the language. His first scientific paper was ''Nogle Raskiana'' (1874). He began to study the accent of Danish and Slavic languages, and he was puzzled by the fact that the Gothic words ''fadar'' and ''broþar'' have different consonants after the root vowel. He was preoccupied with the study of accent at the time, so he sought the explanation in that direction which led to the formation of Verner's Law. She represented the electoral district of Louis-Saint-Laurent in the House of Commons of Canada from 2006 to 2011 as a member of the Conservative Party of Canada. Frederick Arthur Verner (February 26, 1836 – May 16, 1928) was a Canadian painter, well-known for his paintings of the First Nations in the Canadian west and for his paintings of buffalo. William Franklyn Verner (June 24, 1883 – July 1, 1966) was an American athlete and middle-distance runner who competed in the early twentieth century. Verner was born in Grundy County, Illinois. He competed in Athletics at the 1904 Summer Olympics and won a silver medal in the 1500 metres in 4:06.8 behind James Lightbody, and a silver medal with the US Chicago team in the four mile race. Elizabeth O'Neill Verner (December 21, 1883 – April 17, 1979) was an artist, author, lecturer, and preservationist who was one of the leaders of the Charleston Renaissance. She has been called "the best-known woman artist of South Carolina of the twentieth century." Early life and education Elizabeth Quale O'Neill was born Dec. 21, 1883, in Charleston, South Carolina. She first studied art with Alice Ravenel Huger Smith. In 1901, after attending a Catholic girls’ school in Columbia, S.C., she enrolled at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, where she studied for two years with Thomas Anshutz. Gerald Verner White (July 6, 1879 – October 24, 1948) was a Canadian politician. Born in Pembroke, Ontario, the son of Peter White and Janet Reid White, White was educated at Pembroke Public and High Schools. He received a Bachelor of Science in Mining Engineering degree in 1901 from McGill University. He entered the lumber business, eventually becoming president of the Cunningham Lumber Company and the Pembroke Standard, Limited. Johan Verner Weckman (26 July 1882 – 22 February 1968) was a wrestler, who is the first Finnish Olympic gold medalist. Wrestling He was inspired to take up wrestling at the age of 15. He joined the club Helsingfors Gymnastikklubben in 1902, then moved to Helsingin Atleettiklubi in 1903. He won the Finnish national Greco-Roman heavyweight championship in 1904. Then he moved to Germany, where he joined the club Germania Karlsruhe. He won the unofficial Greco-Roman heavyweight world title in Duisburg in 1905. Weckman was the initiating force behind Finland sending a team to the 1906 Intercalated Games.
