Gerald Verner White
Gerald Verner White (July 6, 1879 – October 24, 1948) was a Canadian politician. Born in Pembroke, Ontario, the son of Peter White and Janet Reid White, White was educated at Pembroke Public and High Schools. He received a Bachelor of Science in Mining Engineering degree in 1901 from McGill University. He entered the lumber business, eventually becoming president of the Cunningham Lumber Company and the Pembroke Standard, Limited. He was first elected to the House of Commons of Canada for Renfrew North in a 1906 by-election after the death of his father. A Conservative, he was re-elected in 1908 and 1911. During World War I, he was a Colonel, Officer Reserve in the Canadian Expeditionary Force. He was appointed a Commander of the Order of the British Empire in the 1918 New Year Honours for his efforts during the war. Order Of The British Empire
The Most Excellent Order of the British Empire is a British order of chivalry, rewarding contributions to the arts and sciences, work with charitable and welfare organisations, and public service outside the civil service. It was established on 4 June 1917 by King George V and comprises five classes across both civil and military divisions, the most senior two of which make the recipient either a knight if male or dame if female. There is also the related British Empire Medal, whose recipients are affiliated with, but not members of, the order. Recommendations for appointments to the Order of the British Empire were originally made on the nomination of the United Kingdom, the self-governing Dominions of the Empire (later Commonwealth) and the Viceroy of India. 1918 New Year Honours
The 1918 New Year Honours were appointments by King George V to various orders and honours to reward and highlight good works by citizens of the British Empire. The appointments were published in ''The London Gazette'' and ''The Times'' in January, February and March 1918. Unlike the 1917 New Year Honours, the 1918 honours included a long list of new knights bachelor and baronets, but again the list was dominated by rewards for war efforts. As ''The Times'' reported: "The New Year Honours represent largely the circumstances of war, and, perhaps, as usual, they also reflect human nature in an obvious form. The list is one of the rare opportunities for the public to scan the names of soldiers who have distinguished themselves in service." Senatorial Division
Canadian Senate divisions refers to two aspects of the Senate of Canada. First, it refers to the division of Canada into four regional Senate divisions of 24 senators each, as set out in section 22 of the Constitution Act, 1867.The Constitution Act, 1867', 30 & 31 Vict., c. 3, s. 22 (U.K.). The four regions are the Western Provinces, Ontario, Quebec and the Maritimes.
