1840 United States Census
The United States census of 1840 was the sixth census of the United States. Conducted by the Census Office on June 1, 1840, it determined the resident population of the United States to be 17,069,453 – an increase of 32.7 percent over the 12,866,020 persons enumerated during the 1830 census. The total population included 2,487,355 slaves. In 1840, the center of population was about 260 miles (418 km) west of Washington, near Weston, Virginia (now in West Virginia). William Cahoon
William Cahoon (January 12, 1774 – May 30, 1833) was an American judge and politician. He served as a U.S. representative from Vermont. Biography Cahoon was born in Providence in the Colony of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations to Daniel Cahoon Jr (1737-1811) and Lillis (Dyer) Cahoon (1740-1832). He attended the common schools. He moved with his parents to Lyndon, Vermont in 1791 and engaged in milling and agricultural pursuits. He was a member of the Vermont State House of Representatives from 1802 until 1810. He succeeded his father as town clerk in Lyndon, and served from 1808 until 1829. Cahoon was a presidential elector in 1808 and voted for Madison and Langdon. He was appointed major general in the militia in 1808 and served during the War of 1812. From 1811 until 1819, Cahoon served as Caledonia County judge. Isaac Fletcher (American Politician)
Isaac Fletcher (November 22, 1784 – October 19, 1842) was an American lawyer and politician. He served as a U.S. Representative from Vermont and as Adjutant General of the Vermont Militia. Biography Fletcher was born in Dunstable, Massachusetts to Joseph Fletcher and Molly Cummings Fletcher. He pursued classical studies, and graduated with honors from Dartmouth College in Hanover, New Hampshire in 1808. He taught at the academy at Chesterfield, New Hampshire while in college, and after graduating he studied law with the firm of Prescott & Dunbar in Keene, New Hampshire. He was admitted to the bar in Keene and in Newfane, Vermont in December 1811, and moved to Lyndon, Vermont to start a practice. Among the prospective attorneys who studied under Fletcher were Thomas J. D. Henry Fisk Janes
Henry Fisk Janes (October 10, 1792 – June 6, 1879) was an American lawyer and politician. He served as a U.S. Representative from Vermont. Biography Janes was born in Brimfield, Massachusetts and moved with his parents to Calais, Vermont where he pursued academic studies. He served in the War of 1812 as an officer in Captain Gideon Wheelock's company of Vermont Militia, and participated in the Battle of Plattsburgh. He studied law in Montpelier and was admitted to the bar. He began the practice of law in Waterbury. He was Postmaster from 1820 until 1830. He served as a member of the Governor's Council from 1830 until 1834. Janes was elected as an Anti-Masonic candidate to the Twenty-third Congress to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Benjamin F.
