Vello Salo
Vello Salo (until 1945 Endel Vaher; 5 November 1925 Võisiku Parish, Viljandi County – 21 April 2019) was an Estonian Catholic cleric, essayist, translator. He was a notable promoter of Estonian literature in exile. By confession, he was a Catholic. During WW II, he joined with Finnish Infantry Regiment 200. In 1962, he established Estonian exile publishing house Maarjamaa. Since 1998, he was a member of Estonian Writers' Union. Since 2001, he was a priest for Pirita Monastery. In 2018, the documentary film was made about Salo's life. The film was titled as "Igapäevelu müstika" ('Vello Salo: The Mystery of Everyday Life'), directed by Jaan Tootsen. Pirita Monastery
Pirita Convent ( et, Pirita klooster) was a monastery for both monks and nuns dedicated to St. Brigitta, located in the district of Pirita in Tallinn, Estonia. It functioned from 1407 to 1575. It was the largest convent in Livonia, and one of the largest in Northern Europe. History The idea of founding the monastery dates to merchants (H. Huxer, G. Kruse, H. Swalbart) of Tallinn of around 1400. In 1407, two monks from Vadstena Abbey arrived in Tallinn to counsel the merchants. The first permit to break dolomite to gather building material for building the complex was acquired in 1417. The convent was constructed under the supervision of the architect Heinrich Swalbart. The main church of the monastery was consecrated on 15 August 1436 by the Bishop of Tallinn Heinrich II. Several of the merchants who had originally proposed the monastery later became its monks. Jaan Tootsen
Jaan Tootsen (born 14 October 1975) is an Estonian Estonian film director, screenwriter and film producer. Tootsen's father is journalist, writer and politician Toivo Tootsen. His half-brother is writer Tõnis Tootsen. Since 2000 he has worked at Estonian National Broadcasting. He has been a long-time editor of radio program "Ööülikool". 2012-2016 he was cultural advisor for Estonian president. Estonian Students' Society
The Estonian Students' Society ( et, Eesti Üliõpilaste Selts; commonly used acronym: EÜS) is the largest and oldest all-male academical student society in Estonia, and is similar to the Baltic German student organizations known as corporations (Corps) (not to be confused with US college fraternities). It was founded in 1870 at Tartu. It has over 900 members in Estonia and abroad. In 1881 the Society adopted blue, black and white as its colours. Its first flag was made in 1884 and this tricolour was later (1918) accepted as the National Flag of Estonia. The original flag is still in existence. In the wake of the Estonian national awakening, many young Estonian intellectuals had ties to the EÜS, and the organization had impact beyond its borders. It was instrumental in the founding of the Estonian National Museum in 1909, and the EÜS library was donated to the museum.
