Vehicle Registration Plates Of Quebec
The Provinces and territories of Canada, Canadian province of Quebec first required its residents to register their motor vehicles in 1906. Registrants provided their own Vehicle registration plate, licence plates for display until 1908, when the province began to issue plates. Plates are currently issued by the Société de l'assurance automobile du Québec (Quebec Automobile Insurance Corporation). From 1963 to 1977 (except 1967), licence plates carried the slogan ''La Belle Province'' ("The Beautiful Province"), a nickname for Quebec. Since 1978, they have carried ''Je me souviens'' ("I remember"), the official motto of the province. Since 1979, Quebec legislation has required only rear plates, though there are certain cases where front plates are also required. Annual renewal stickers were used from 1979 to 1992; Quebec is currently one of five provinces where such stickers are not used (the others being Saskatchewan, Manitoba, British Columbia and Ontario). () is the official motto of Quebec, and translated literally into English means: "I remember." The exact meaning of this short sentence is subject to several interpretations, though all relate to the History of Quebec, history of the Quebec people. The motto can be found on all Quebec license plates, among other things. Origins Étienne-Paschal Taché is credited with having popularized the phrase. In 1883, his son Eugène-Étienne Taché, Assistant Commissioner for Crown lands in Quebec and architect of the provincial Parliament Building (Quebec), Parliament building, had the motto carved in stone below the coat of arms of Quebec which appears above the Parliament Building's main entrance door. The Automobile License Plate Collectors Association (ALPCA) is the largest such organization in the world. Founded in Rumney, New Hampshire, Rumney Depot, New Hampshire, United States, in 1954 and holding its first meeting/convention in North Attleboro, Massachusetts, North Attleboro, Massachusetts, in 1955. It serves as a way for license plate collectors to trade plates, distribute news, and provide historic information to members. Overview ALPCA currently has approximately 2,800 registered members and over 13,100 registered member numbers, although many of the earlier—and therefore lower-numbered—members are now deceased or are no longer members. When an individual joins, he or she is assigned a membership number, which started with #1 in 1954, and are currently being issued in the 13,800 range.
